Privately-owned PopCap, developers of "casual" games including Peggle and Bejeweled, said Wednesday it was able to make major headway at U.S. cash registers last year, despite a 14 percent decline in overall PC retail game sales.
Citing NPD Group figures, the Seattle-based company said retail revenues grew 85 percent in 2008 over 2007. The studio opted to release dollar figures.
Fourth quarter sales saw the most growth last year, the company said, attributing the rise to the recently-released Bejeweled Twist.
PopCap, which employs over 200, also has a robust online business that NPD does not take into account when reporting retail sales.
In August 2008, the company announced that the Bejeweled franchise alone has generated over $300 million in consumer spending and "tens of millions" in online advertising.
PopCap games cost $20 and below.
The firm claimed that the boost placed the company in the top 20 biggest videogame retail publishers by dollar for the first time in its history.
