A little over two years after the launch of the PlayStation 3, Sony announced Tuesday that the PS2 has sold 50 million units in North America alone.

The console, launched October 2000 in North America, has played host to some of the most memorable game franchises that continue on today, and has easily outlasted its contemporaries: 2001's Xbox and GameCube, and 1999's Dreamcast.

For November 2008, NPD Group, which tracks U.S. figures, said PS2 sold 206K, less than half of what it sold that month a year prior. As new consoles come down in price and increase in popularity, PS2 sales are expected to continue to fade.

Still at $130, Sony considers the console a perfect way for entry-level consumers to gain access to an enormous library of games, most of which are sold for budget prices.

Even after this many years, Sony plans on continuing PS2 support to some degree. Speaking to the Associated Press, Sony Computer Entertainment America hardware marketing director John Koller said, "We don't intend on discarding the system any time soon."

Thats quite an achievement but wasn't PS2 popular purely out of circumstances? Last gen Microsoft were finding their feet & Nintendo had lost their way. This gen, Sony simply has more competition. Maybe the most popular is simply the one who gets their console out first?

And also the Xbox360, it was released first but it has not done the best this generation.

You forgot the Dreamcast, which is even mentioned in the article. Clearly being the first didn't do too well for it.

I wonder how far into space that would reach if they were stacked end to end?

Last Gens Xbox 360?

Sure seems that way in the hash they are making of the PS3?

Have you seen what they have done to that poor machine, I wouldnt buy one purely on the basis they cut have the extra features, half the USB ports and the Backwards compatability...

Sure as hell dont see anything special in MGS4 anyway........

however I still would go buy another PS2, Best console ever.....

Sony's true achievement. It's a wonder they ever bothered to make a PS3, they'd probably be more profitable if they kept supporting the PS2 at full steam!

Then XBOX360 would have been at 40 millions right now.

I only hope that god forgive as for taking his place and creating our own (game) worlds and abusing them as we do with the real one.
