The Playstation 3 and PSP have accumulated an install base of 61.3 million.

That was the claim according to Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer, who addressed a packed audience at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Moments later in Stringer’s keynote speech, he introduced Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai, who in turn proceeded to flaunt more large numbers that the company was responsible for.

One million dollars’ worth of virtual goods has been sold through PlayStaion Home, Hirai announced. The service, which reached an open beta stage back in December, has now been downloaded to 3.4 million PS3s. As reported earlier, Electronic Arts are now embarking on their individual virtual space for the service.

Also reported here earlier, Hirai explained that Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet had sold over 1.3 million copies, with Sony logging 300,000 user-generated levels, and that the PlayStation Network now holds over 17 million unique accounts.

yeah sorry grog but that gimmick statement shows how obviously misinformed you are you can play your PSP games on your bigscreen through the PS3 you can play many downloadable games for the PS3 on PSP you can text w your friends through your PSP watch any movie you have on the PS3 hardrive from anywhere w the PSP and there constantly updating the features .

Combining numbers of the PSP and PS3 (in addition to their "value" press release the other day) makes Sony look so painfully desperate.

@rydamgw
err really ? I have a white PSP and think its great its my handheld of choice but i have very little intention of buying a PS3 , on connectivity its one small feature amongst many.

If you dont have PS3 what are you posting about one, when you really dont know anything about it?

Interconnectivity is a gimmick that has yet to demonstrate any benefit in either direction (to/from PSP/PS3). This must be Official Press Release Week.

A gimmick? How is it a gimick that i can play few games that support the feature trough online networks. Monsters, Eaden, and few others, access all my video, music, and photos while i am the go?

How is this a GIMMICK? Elaborate...

what alot of ppl dont realize is all those PSP owners are more likely to pick up the PS3 due to the interconnectivity. Sony has an interesting strategy that will pay of in the long run.

Ditto, the same blind fanboys dont realize that there are 100 Million PS1, 120+ PS2 users backing up the PS brand alone.

Even if 1/3 went to Microsoft, that leaves a big chunk for SONY. Not to mention Sony is the only company that has three platforms bringing in $$. Yeah they tend to forget that, they tend to throw not enough games ( doubt it ) and features ( which now are on par if not better than the BOX ) Then again both systems are great, depends which you choose, and this bs small talk needs to stop. Its like a flock of birds dropping on one product. Its getting old.
