PS3 Blows Away The Competition In Japan
Sony’s PS3 comfortably outsold all rival systems in Japan during the week ended September 6.
Retailers shifted over 150,000 PS3s - up from 1,040 the prior week - thanks to the release of the new slimline model and recently introduced price cut. The console’s launch week success in Japan was also mirrored in the US and the UK.
Nintendo’s DSi, the PS3’s closest competitor, saw sales rise marginally to top 60,000 units, almost three times as many as the PSP and Wii managed.
DS Lite sales outpaced those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which may see a boost in next week’s rankings following the introduction of a price cut on September 10, while the PS2 rounded off the hardware chart.
Meanwhile, the latest Gundam game from Namco Bandai, Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki for PS3, debuted atop the Japanese software chart. The title sold 178,000 copies in its opening week, having launched on September 3 as a standalone game and as part of a PS3 Slim bundle.

I guess that's partly because of the PS3 phat sales slump the month before the slim was released though. Still, very big numbers.
Wtf is up with Gundam. Every Gundam game this gen has sucked. Really bad. Armoured Core is a much better game. I'm really happy Sony are driving sales with a new SKU, I would love to have a tap into an alternate reality where they put forward a BC PS3 slim. The people I know on the fence are considering buying but are put off by no BC. They will buy eventually, but they would be there now if there was BC as most of them have massive PS2 libraries and the retailers here are offering sweet deals on PS2 trade-ins, so essentially they can't get the deal. Yes they're cheap and could just keep their PS2's but for some reason this doesn't appeal to their logic, whether it's a monetary thing or some weird stubbornness holding them back I don't know.
To be honest I woouldn't buy a PS3 slim either buts that's for other reasons, I couldn't give a toss about BC. I got PS2's coming out my ears.

I must admit I don't know too much about this new slim PS3. It does look a lot better than the original PS3 but has the tech been tweaked at all? The two games I played on it (Fight Night Round 3 and GH World Tour) had noticeably longer loading times than the 360 versions. Has anybody else noticed this?

Err, I'm not sure it was just the new PS3 slim that caused this sales peak.
Does anybody understand how crazy the Japanese go for Gundam, and how much heritage the series has in the country? This game being bundled with the PS3 slim has hiked up sales in the very short term.
It is comparable to the new Beatles Rock Band game over here, apart from being even more popular. The Japanese made a full scale Gundam statue for gawd sake!
the PS3 also launched with a gundam game, though I don't think that one did too well.
PSP also has a ton of gundam games on it, Sony seems to be the main company Bandai goes.
You could sell a rock with a bundled Gundam game in Japan and they'd still go mental. Most of the anime series have been pretty good by all accounts though. Only seen Seed and really enjoyed it.
