Growing threads on the official PS3 forums claim that the latest system firmware update, version 3.0, is leading to a number of DualShock controller issues and game freezes.
Numerous users, some of whom specifically name the ceramic white wireless PS3 DualShock pad, are reporting their inability to synch up controllers with their consoles.
Other users are experiencing “freezes” mid-session when playing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a problem they say began after the firmware update’s release on September 1.
Many of the users reporting problems say that they have just purchased the newly released PS3 Slim, although others are experiencing the same issues with older PS3 models.
Billed as the last “significant” PS3 firmware update of 2009, version 3.0 introduces new trophy and friends list features, as well as dynamic dashboard themes and PlayStation Store shortcuts.
Sony has experienced problems in the past when rolling out major PS3 firmware updates. In July last year, firmware version 2.40 - which introduced in-game access to the system's XrossMediaBar and a Trophies achievement system - had to be pulled for further testing after numerous users reported running into technical problems - including consoles locking up - after downloading or while attempting to download it. Sony released a new firmware update shortly afterwards which rectified the issues.
We’ve contacted Sony for comment on the reported firmware 3.0 problems.

Well I can report no freezes here with my bluray player :D I didn't know it could play games too, wow, what a great firmware update!!
...trolling along...
It's not like the 360 hasn't had problems with firmware updates. I personally haven't had any issues at all with either console and their firmware updates. Storm teacup and all that.
But hey.
They moved the battery meter.
We should've expected consequences.
Fairly pointless update. The only good thing really is the ability to have 2 different sound settings for different inputs. Which I thought was completely stupid only having one option to begin with. Before, I had to set it to optical during the day when I can have it hooked up to my surround sound then choose HDMI when I played at night. Hassle! It would have been ok if everyone had an amp with HDMI pass thru. Sadly, I don't so the procedure was a little annoying so it's nice to have the situation rectified.
Wasn't the iPlayer supposed to be in this update? Or am I just an idiot that can't find it?
Never mind. I found the iPlayer. It wasn't there when I first updated, is now. Kinda cool but can't see me ever using it.
actually once i installed the new firmware i have problems with the browser and MGO.i also believe that this update offers nothing new so it's pointless
I had never had a crash on PS Home but yesterday I was unable to enter one particular space in Home. Tried twice and it crashed exactly on the same spot. The problem could be in Home. I'll try again today.
So now when you're backed into a corner, with no points left in in your argument, you can just yell "FUv3!" just like RRoD?
Awesome! 360 owners finally have a blanket "go-nowhere" statement of their own.
FAIL.
Your bizarre recent comments make it sound like RRoD is some kind of strawman or red herring instead of a distressingly common occurrence and shorthand for one of the single biggest failures in consumer electronics history.
Sony may have shit the bed with this latest update (and other updates, for that matter) but they have a long way to go before reaching levels of embarrassment and humiliation comparable to a 54.2% hardware failure rate, and no amount of would-be snarky comments is going to change that. Sorry!
Also: RRoD!
Man, this sucks! School is making it really hard to have a proper incendiary argument.
I was just making a joke. I mean, come on. It's news worth reporting, but it's not something that won't be fixed in an update that's probably a week away, if that; so there wasn't going to be any deep conversation on this topic anyway.
I think I've been making the comments that I have lately because so many vocal individuals are trying to silence any bad press related to Sony right in the middle of some of their worst business practices in history. There getting their asses handed to them buy a system that charges for the internet, isn't wireless, uses antiquated disc technology, & hardly functions at all on its best days.
So I guess I just shoot the other way because I can't handle all the lunacy.
Keep fighting the good fight, I'm sure Microsoft really appreciate it just as much as Sony really appreciate DubsTF.
LOL!
You obviously didn't read my other comments on this article.
This is not the only comment you've made lately to suggest that the RRoD problem is somehow overstated. If it were, I might have been more likely to read it as a joke.
To be fair, I don't think I've ever heard you relegate yourself to that argument; as much as you hate the 360.
I am not some knee-jerk Sony defender (see my comments below), but to repeatedly suggest that RRoD is nothing more than a fanboy's last-resort argument is disingenuous at best.
And to clarify, I don't really hate the 360: I own many fine games for it and have spent several hours this week playing Shadow Complex. But boy do I hate Microsoft.
Mine works fine, in fact looks very nice, all the dust particles in the background, pitty I have my own wall paper set.
I have an old 60gb ps3, bought in the uk with 500gb of hdd, and works perfectly.
Bit annoyed that sony seems to be leaving the subtle options menus for big banner menus.
Hope the xmb doesnt become like a town market full of sales ads and places where sony believe you want to spend your money in.
Two playstation store shortcuts? BIT MUCH
Appart from that its nice they included BBC i-player on it, and a better internet browser, but this are all overdue, we need better organisational tools for the content we have stored on the ps3.
I guess according to plan, this are just still the teenage years of the ps3, but come on we want to play more with our playstation.
I can't stand the glittery stuff. Is there a way to turn that off?
Yeah, the nomenclature is somewhat confusing but I think you need to switch it to "classic" theme instead of "original" theme or something like that. Has anyone figured out how to turn off the scrolling news ticker in the upper right-hand corner?
I've yet to encounter any of the technical glitches other people are reporting, but I'm pretty sure I dislike every single cosmetic change made with this update and would hands-down prefer to go back to the old interface. Whoever's in charge of XMB updates has no taste.
Unfortunately, it looks like the only way to turn off the ticker and the in your face store stuff is to disable internet in system options - which obviously isn't something most of us want to do (I'm not being sarcastic, looking at the forums it seems that's the only way to disable it right now).
I think Sony must have gotten the message that this update was not popular and will probably give us an option to go back (in terms of interface/etc) with a patch relatively soon.
You can at least stop the "what's new" store content from being in your face upon startup via system settings but there doesn't seem to be a similar menu option to disable the scrolling ticker. Lame.
Even the graphical presentation of "what's new" with its twisting-in-3D grid of fading screens is gratuitous and silly. One of the reasons I always liked/preferred the XMB was for its simplicity, class and restraint, but now it seems as though they're trying to turn it into a gaudy, ad-laden eyesore like the 360 interface.
That video says it's under the theme tab.
