PS3 hardware sales close in on Xbox 360

The PlayStation 3 is getting closer to overtaking lifetime sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 .

Sony's latest financial results reveal that lifetime, worldwide sales of the PS3 totalled 55.5 million units at the end of its financial quarter on September 30. Last month, Microsoft confirmed that lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 stood at 57.6 million units, with hardware shipments declining year on year.

During the quarter, Sony sold 3.7 million PS3s, an increase of 200,000 units - or 5.7 per cent - year on year. Software sales rose by a similar proportion, climbing 5.9 per cent to 37.4 million units.

Despite the improved sales, Sony's Consumer Products And Services division - which includes its PlayStation business as well as PC, mobile, camera, and TV and video - was hit with a quarterly loss of ¥34.6 billion (£277.6 million).

When you calculate installed base you also have fo factor in that just about every single Xbox 360 sold in the first 2 years is now dead and sitting in a garbage dump somewhere.

The attach rate for the 360 must be even more amazing than it looks then.

Seriously, people didn't bin early 360's. They either got them fixed by MS or sold them.

Game have binned a ton of them, I'd imagine it's much the same in other stores.

After my *sixth* original 360 RRoDed (five were from the refurb "deadpool"), I shelved it and bought a newer model which hasn't had single a problem.

I still have my launch 360, it only rrod'd once and its seen a lot of use. Neither my ps1 or ps2 lasted nearly as long. I find it strange that sony finally make a piece of hardware (ps3) that doesn't break within twelve months and all of a sudden they are the kings of solid hardware, people have very short memories i guess.

My PlayStation lasted around 6 years, and was carted all over the country in a carrier bag, and my PS2 is still going. Bearing in mind that it was used as a DVD player as well, it's had quite a lot of use.

As far as I'm concerned, yeah, Sony are the kings of solid hardware, where optical media is concerned anyway.

I'm so glad I'm not a Gamespot user anymore. To think the type of comments this type of article would have prompted. *shudder*

Anyway, it is good to see the healthy sales of current gen systems. It's a good representation of how popular this industry has become. Go games industry!
