In typical fashion, Nintendo Wii handily outsold the two higher-priced consoles with 555,000 units sold.
PS3 led Xbox 360 as the two consoles vied for the top slot in the high-def console race in July, a month that saw sales climb 28 percent year-on-year to $1.1 billion, NPD Group reported Thursday.
In the U.S., Sony's console sold 224,900 units versus Xbox 360's 204,800 during the month.
PS3 also topped Xbox 360 in June, nearly doubling sales of Microsoft's console that month thanks to the release of PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4.
In typical fashion, Nintendo Wii handily outsold the two higher-priced consoles with 555,000 units sold in July.
Sales of consoles and portable gaming devices drove hardware revenues for June to $446.9 million, a 17 percent year-on-year increase.
Nintendo DS was the top-selling piece of hardware with 608,400 units sold, while PSP and PS2 sold 221,700 and 155,500 units, respectively.
Software growth was in line with analysts' expectations, and showed the greatest sales growth during the month, rising 41 percent to $591.1 million with EA Sports' NCAA Football 09 for Xbox 360 leading the charge at 397,600 units sold.
NCAA outsold the May release Wii Fit, which sold 369,600. Guitar Hero: On Tour for DS sold 309,700 units for a podium finish.
Also of note was July's Soul Calibur IV, which sold 218,900 on Xbox 360 and and 155,800 on PS3.
Sales of accessories hit $149.1 million for month, a rise of 19 percent.

Xbox 360 outsold Playstation 3 in Japan by a ratio of 2.5:1
There were about 9,500 PS3 systems sold in Japan, with about 24,500 Xbox 360 systems sold in Japan.
Obviously the "hardware sales" era for Metal Gear Solid 4 is over.
Tales of Vesaria from Namco is the cause of the hardware sales increase for Xbox 360 in Japan. That game had an even better opening week than Blue Dragon did! It sold about 110,000 copies in its first week!
Metal Gear Solid 4 dropped entirely out of the Top 10...and it actually dropped all the way down to #34...which is very disappointing. Konami will almost certainly feel a financial loss because of this.
Interesting month. Outside of Soul Calibur IV, one might say that the entire top 10 of software is made up of mainstream titles.

I guess the 60gig Xbox price drop leaked at the start of the month can't have helped sales of the 360, why have a 20gig unit when you can wait a few weeks and have a 60gig for the same price. It'll be interesting to see what happens next month.
It wasn't really a price cut, they just introduced an HDD with more space for the same price. The 20gigs will phase out. But there is a rumored price cut in September from a pretty good source (dont' have info as of right now) that states the Arcade unit would be 199, 60 gig 299, elite 399. that would def boost sales. And even if the PS3 kept this pace 25k units ahead of the 360 it would take over 20 years for the PS3 to catch the 360 in hardware sales (in the states any way).
It is quite misleading to discuss PS3 beating 360 in the hi-def race and then quote total industry revenue of 1.1 billion. 360 and PS3 did not generate 1.1 billion in the month, but the industry as a whole including portables, PS2 and Wii. Your phrasing would make people think that those 2 consoles generated 1.1 billion when in fact they would have contributed less than a third of that revenue.
PS3 outsells Xbox in America, while this week, Xbox outsells PS3 in Japan. trippy!
Madden tops Wii Fit... O_o?
If a price cut doesn't move any units then you are in some trouble. I figured a $299 XBox would sell quite a few units, especially during NCAA/Madden release time, guess not.
Well, the Xbox price cut couldn't have come sooner. They better get on it and advertise like crazy.
