Sony’s Playstation 3 has outsold all its handheld and home console competitors in Japan for the first time.
Sales of the PS3 jumped 20,000 units during the week ending March 1; up from 16,149 to 36,513 in line with the runaway sales success of Sega’s Yakuza 3. The PS3 exclusive title sold 372,000 copies in its first week.
The PS3 sales surge was enough to see it inch ahead of the pack. Nintendo’s DSi hit an all-time low (35,827) since its release in November last year, though the decline occurred as Nintendo announced new colours for the system.
Sony’s PSP, meanwhile, was within touching distance of Nintendo’s camera-enabled handheld, selling 35,588 units for the week. That figure sees the system pick up sales from the week prior, which had at the time dropped to 29,552 units.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sees its sales storm survive only a single week, as unit sales fell over 53 percent to 11,795. The Wii, meanwhile, saw sales climb slightly; up around a thousand units to 17,876.
Full list for the week ending March 1 according to Media Create:

Last week.
2009 Japanese sales history.
The focus of this article is on sales of hardware in the Japanese market that is very small. But what this article should point a focus on is the poor management of Sega.
Sega is the company that made the incredibly stupid decision to released software exclusively for the Playstation 3 with at least two games this generation--Valkria Chronicles and Yakuza 3. It was bad enough the Sega would do this with Valkria, since that is a niche genre like RTS. That is why Valkria is one of the worst selling pieces of software this generation. But Yakuza 3 is a game that may have had potential if it would have been released on the Xbox 360 with a marketing campaign focused on Xbox 360 gamers in North America and Europe.
Somone at Sega apparently didn't care that there are over 8 Million more Xbox 360 systems sold in North America than the PS3. Maybe this is why the decision was made not to release Yakuza 3 outside of Japan. But the fact is, the PS3 has sold very poorly in Japan, too.
It really was a dumb decision of Sega to support the PS3 with "exclusives" since the PS3 is the worst-selling console this generation.
I think that Sega should follow the lead of Square Enix and focus on the much larger western audience of gamers; that is, IF they want to earn money and profit. The way to do that is release exclusives for the Xbox 360, since Xbox 360 is so much less expensive to develop software for and has a much larger audience of gamers who continuously put Xbox 360 software at the top. Sega should at least be a multiplatform developer where they always release software for both Xbox 360 and PS3. But the one thing Sega should NEVER do is release software exclusively for the worst-selling console, which is the PS3.
Sega dont make good games any more, got no buisnes sense and dont make sense! I mean, have any of you fellas completed Shenmue 2? If I am not mistaken, that game wasnt considerd a sales flop by any standards, and i dont know anyone who as completed it and still dont bang on about they dont care what system the sequel comes to, they'l GET IT! So were is Shenmue 3 Sega? sorry i expected something insignificant like" common" sense from yall! You are obviously dangerously allergic to PROFITS! YOU dont deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as NINTENDO! yea i'll kick a downed dog! (what the hell is up with me? 1992 is long gone and SNES won! left school in 95 but the playground mentality is still ingrained into my very being! ;) )
Kim I'm still waiting on my Halo Wars invite. If you don't want to play xbox live with me just tell me and I'll leave you alone but I can't take being ignored any longer!!!
Slow day, Kim? Gotta troll on articles 3 days old now?
360 sales fell over 53 percent. Ouch!
Sony has been due for some good news. Hopefully they finish learning the lesson that exclusives matter now.

I'm most surprised how the Wii is doing. The 360 get's outsold usually 2:1 by the Wii in the US and is only about 35% behind the Wii in Japan. edit: I mean month to month, not total life-time sales.
And to be fair, the 360 is still higher than their usual 9k range at close to 12k. Not huge, but still higher.
And deeznuts, you're in this thread just like everyone else. Don't like it, we def won't miss you if you go back to Better Home and Gardens.
It's gonna be interesting to see how the Wii trends the next couple of weeks amist all these big releases for the HD consoles. It might be able to weather the storm and hover around 15k - 20k. Notable software will be releasing soon (Monster Hunter G, Arc Rise Fantasia, etc.) which should give those numbers a shot in the arm. There's also MH3 this summer.
Also, as evidenced by 360 last week and PS3 this week, console sales are very release driven. Sales spike when great software is released. Ninty though Animal Crossing and Wii Music would keep numbers much healthier during this stretch, but it certainly isn't working out too well!
"Monster hunter" of the console version is a minor. The hardware that MH is popular a lot is PSP. If it is PSP, four people or less can be played, and all quest is free. However, it is charged online in the console version. Please do not do the expectation why a Wii version sells like a PSP version a lot.

You misunderstood... Nobody expects Moster Hunter to be as big of a success on Wii as it has been on the PSP. Certainly, this type of game just lends itself to a handheld better, but that's not to say the MH3 on Wii doesn't have potential. Irregardless, it'll most certainly provide a boost for Wii system sales - that was my point.
yea sales of the wii definately saw a drop in sales in japan over the last 6 month's.
It seems japanese gamers are really more interested in the handhelds, than the US are. Unless a big game is released there on a home console, in which case sales shoot up.
All systems did. The last six months includes Xmas! YoY would be a better metric for comparison - and YoY Wii sales a WAY down (no Wii Fit or Smash to spur Q1 sales).
Next week: Playstation Returns To Usual Spot.
Nah, RE5 is releasing. Not only that, but the Advent Child DVD with a playable demo of FFXIII is coming in the next couple of weeks too. Not to mention another Dynasty Warries game or whatever. The PS3 should remain quite "high" actually.
With *RE5* and Yakuza bundles still selling? hah.
Good point.
Yep ^ and no one is complaining.... ;)
And the 360 is back to the usual spot.
D-O-R-K-S
Sigh...
And DForce is back to HIS usual spot. 8D
Can always count on DForce to jump into any discussion. Feet first.
