Sony’s PS3 recorded an 11-fold jump in sales during the week ended September 5, GfK Chart-Track has told us.

The sales increase follows the launch of the new PS3 Slim on Tuesday, September 1.

According to a GfK Chart-Track spokesperson, the console outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by three units to one during the week in question. PS3 sales outpaced those of Nintendo’s Wii and DS Lite by the same margin.

Sales of the Xbox 360, which has also seen a recent price cut, increased by 29 per cent week-on-week. The console previously recorded a 43 per cent rise in unit sales during the week the price cut came into effect.

New redesigned console with a £50 price cut, roughly £200 cheaper than it's initial release price, so it's hardly surprising we have seen a sales hike.

btw Germany has officially become the largest gaming market in Europe overtaking the UK. Google it. I read it in the last week or so

360 is still microsoft, and they have infinitybillion dollars left in their warchest.

Do we have any US sales info for the slim yet?

Wow who saw this coming?! Of course now X360 sales have tethered off, and Sony release a new version of their console, there is always going to be a bit of a demand from the people who must own the latest hardware. To be honest I'm surprised the sales ratio between the consoles was as LOW as 3 to 1....and yet again its ratios, like previously given percentages. No hard sales figures.

There are two simple reasons I don't own a PS3 (or other consoles for that matter)...but I'm not going to state them as god knows I will just be labelled as a troll/fanboy. All I am going to say is I'm ecstatically happy with my X360 and it feels good to know, for once (after owning an N64, Dreamcast), that I definitely don't have the 'lame horse' of the current generation of consoles.

How can you not own any console and own an XBOX 360 at the same time? I smell a rat.

zerobob's picture

Lol, I meant other consoles other than the X360, ie. the Wii or DS.

Now think what would've been if Sony had launched the PS3 at this price initially? I know I'd very likely have a PS3 instead of a 360 myself.

I just hope that Microsoft doesn't panic if PS3 sales continue like this, then rush Project Natal out the door half finished. It will be a humbling day at Microsoft when Sony over takes them.

I don't want to sound negative but after the recent euro price hike (and lets face facts it is a price increase, an extra £30 to own a 360 is an increase however M$ try and spin it, we all know an extra 60gig of hard drive space costs M$ nothing) M$ deserve to be panned by the marketplace. The 360 may have better exclusives but is now very bad value for money in hardware terms when compared to the PS3.

360, better exclusives? Maybe in 2007.

nolim's picture

Having played most of the exclusives for each system (except MGS on the PS3 as i'm not a fan of the series, i find all those cut scenes intolerable, i want to play a game not watch it!), i think i can safely say yes, the 360 has better exclusives, at least when it comes to my taste in games, and for the short term future at least this seems set to continue. However this could all change next year and , other than a better joypad, it's the only advantage the 360 still has until M$ drop the price considerably.

the PS3 will only increase its lead in Europe

jb1's picture

It doesn't have a lead in europe.

toadwarrior's picture

Yes they do.

MS only has a lead over Sony in the UK and the US which is why their lead is fragile and their sales will probably slow first because pretty much the rest of the world isn't as keen on the 360 as the PS3.

grognard66's picture

Are you saying UK isn't part of Europe? UK is the largest gaming market in Europe, so it's pretty silly to exclude it to make your shaky point. Wikipedia is hardly a leading source it video game sales tracking. GfK is the only reputable source, outside of NPD in the US, and both have the 360 with significant leads in the regions they cover.
Sony has done a great job of trashing the Playstation brand name this generation - it's just taking the smaller markets longer to come to that realization since they're used to delays and limited support anyway.

toadwarrior's picture

It is part of Europe but even if you combine UK and European sales (companies do separate them), Sony still comes on top so I'm not sure what you're on a out.

You can say your crappy stats say otherwise but I don't see a link.

StealthBadger's picture

Obviously the UK is part of Europe. The point is that while the 360 holds a lead in the UK, the PS3 holds a lead across the rest of europe, and hence, because the PS3 lead on the continent is bigger than the 360 lead in the UK, the PS3 holds a lead in europe. Simples.

jb1's picture

Hard sales figures don't get released for europe.

Dan_Chippendale's picture

I have:

PS3 = 3
360 = 1

kingheff1's picture

Has anyone got the actual sales figures?

NickgamertagO1's picture

Solid sales figures for Europe aren't easy to come by. Even NPD though widely accepted aren't exact either.

Good to see some positive news for Sony. And yes Omega Vader I do think it be a much different story if the PS3 launched at that price. But that's kinda stating the obvious; cut the launch price of a console in half ($600 - $300) it'd be bound to make a difference, even for the PS3. ;)
