Sony will likely cut the price of the PS3 by $100 in mid-August, according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.

Bhatia said that “industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry.”

According to Industry Gamers, Bhatia also said that while software sales for the first half of the year are tracking behind 2008’s, “the second half, in contrast, will likely be up ten percent to 15 percent driven by a robust lineup, easier comparisons and potential price cut(s).”

I'll wait for GT5, thanks. I can play almost everything else on the 360.

You'll likely be waiting another 5 years... Grrr.

Seen as this pretty much contravenes everything they were saying at E3, I don't think this is going to happen.

I'm so there for a Slim PS3. There seems to be this mentality, at Sony, that a price drop would look like desperation. Is this based on Japanese focus groups? In the States, a price drop could clinch things.

Sony needs to get over their arrogance now. They're already about to fail the 'Go now that the iPhone 3G-S has been annonced with 256MB of Ram & 612MHz processor for $50 cheaper.

It's not about whether they could cut the price in june, it's whether it made any sense to. Summer's probably not a big season for videogame buyers, so the people who were going to buy a ps3 probably will either way, and the people who weren't probably won't either way. It's about going "bam! We're cheaper now! just when everybody starts going shopping", until then, they might as well charge as much as possible for them.

@dreamyhunkycuteypants i'd think it pretty obvious that it does not cost sony $800 per ps3...

SaintJude's picture

It's quite telling that they seem so unwilling...

it's because they can't cut the price of the ps3. It costs sony $800 per a console that they make. frankly I like the fact they are losing money on them consoles. I have to wonder what sony share holders are feeling right now. Sony is going only lose even more money.

I think sony has lost about 7 billion on consoles and still in the red. Microsoft spent 10 billion they too are in the red. 2008 was the only year that microsoft was in the black so far.

Actually, it's more like they cannot keep the price as it is. It has to fall, even if licensing takes a massive hit. It has to be done, if only to avoid slipping further behind.

Sony was shoveling some garbage for awhile about the motherboard costing $500!! it turned out to be more like $200. They were trying to make customers think they were getting a deal. The last I read, it cost about $410 to make a PS3; a loss the can easily male up in licensing. That's the real reason they don't want a price drop.

You can't think of it like PC parts. Intel takes a huge profit - sometimes hundreds of dollars. Video cards are the same way. When a console's being designed, companies makes bids to develop foe the console, and that gets prices more reasonable. Don't forget how much a Windows license costs.

Sony would you cut the friggin price already. It's getting boring listening to all these analysts bang on about this. Here's my bit of prediction. There will be an Uncharted 2 pack which will be significantly cheaper than the stand alone PS3. U2 is going to shift units. If a cheaper SKU comes out then there could be a serious up turn in Sony's fortune. So I'm an analyst now, hoorah!

Limanima's picture

It's not Uncharted 2 who will move more units, GT5 is.
A Ps3 GT5 bundle for $300 would be a big boost in sales.

I'd really like to see a price drop, I've been holding out for one before getting a PS3, if they released a slim for £100 cheaper I'd snap it up probably on release day.

Timing is about right (although I figure it will happen at TGS), but I seriously doubt they can cut $100. $50 with some type of value-add seems more realistic.

I wouldn't hold my breath for this one. If they couldn't cut the price in June, how much is two months going to change?

mtofu's picture

Two months will take us out of summer where more people are spending time outside.

Also, summer jobs will be winding down and kids will (hopefully) have some money saved up for a big purchase.

How many times have we heard this now? I'll believe it when it actually happens (which I hope it does!).
