The PS3 and PSP have passed a new sales milestone in the U.K.
Sony Computer Entertainment U.K. head Ray Maguire tells trade paper MCV that the home and handheld consoles have sold over 2 million and 3 million units in the region, respectively.
The announcement comes after the late February release of the highly-anticipated PS3 exclusive first-person shooter, Killzone 2.
"[Killzone 2] certainly has helped drive hardware," Maguire said. "I think there were a lot of people out there who wanted something which really showed the power of PlayStation 3 – and now they can see a reason for them to get on board," Maguire said.
He also surmised that the PS3's sales performance in relation to its higher price tag "suggests more longevity of the PS3 because we have chipped away at the top end of the triangle."
Sony announced that the PSP passed the 50 million unit sold-in mark earlier this year. The company has big plans for the handheld, having announced major franchises for the platform in 2009, including Rock Band, Assassin's Creed and MotorStorm.
Blu-ray movie sales represent less than 3% of movie sales in the world.
Shortly after New Year's, when the sales data from Christmas started to be released, I read an article that talked about how DVD sales still dominated the movie industry, with over 97% of movie sales in the form of DVD.
The article talked about how the remaining 3% did not belong to Blu-ray. The remaining 3% was shared amongst Blu-ray, Laser-disc, VHS, Betamax, CD-ROM, and everything else.
Blu-ray is obviously a failure for a couple of reasons:
1. Poor sales as a result of expensive hardware
2. Poor sales as a result of expensive movies - $35 is just too much
3. Increased Competition from:
(a) Upconverting DVD players that display DVD movies in virtual-HD quality
(b) Dish Network offers movies in 1080p
(c) Video On Demand services like Netflix offer HD movies
4. Blu-ray is Not Future-proof:
People spent thousands of dollars building up their DVD collection. They are not going to go out and buy all those movies on Blu-ray for a second time, especially when you consider that the 1080p format isn't future proof. The HDMI 1.3 format already supports 1440p resolution. Everyone knows the SED technology from Canon/Toshiba is where the future lies.
5. Video On-Demand allows people to have thousands of movies in their collection for half the price of one Blu-ray disc each month! Video On-Demand already has Blockbuster Video on the brink of bankruptcy. There is no doubt that Video-On Demand offers far more programming than the limited selection of Blu-ray could ever hope to offer, and at a much lower price.
I guess Kim's comment here confirms Microsoft has no plans for a blu-ray player for the 360. Direct the horse's mouth, you heard it here first.
You dorks seem to forget that unlike 360, PS3 is not only a games machine. Videogames are only half of the PS3's success:
"100 Million Blu-ray Discs To Be Sold in 2009
Press Release February 24th, 2009
Projects Futuresource Consulting
Research from Futuresource Consulting reveals that consumers are on target to buy in excess of 100 million Blu-ray discs (BD) across the USA, Western Europe and Japan this year, despite the economic downturn.
“In the USA, BD has moved from early adopter phase through to early majority, with the format gaining real traction in the marketplace,” says Mai Hoang, Senior Market Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “Last year in the US alone, BD video retail sales increased by a whopping 320% to 24 million units; and we’re going to see momentum continuing in 2009, with over 80 million disc sales forecast.”
"dailytech.com 2007 article:
According to Video Business, 74 percent of all Blu-ray Disc players in North America are in the form of the PlayStation 3."
Playstation 3's hardware sales is only a means to an end--which is software sales. And for PS3, software not only covers videogames but Blu-ray discs as well.
So compared to PS3's runaway Blu-ray success and steadily rising videogame market presence, what does xbox 360 have? - 2nd place in the console wars--not bad, for dorks.
Deeznuts,
You're starting to get just as annoying as Kim. At least Kim never insults anyone (other than maybe their intelligence). You gotta stop calling people Dorks. That’s at least 3 times you’ve called me/us/everyone a dork. Unless by dorks you mean serious gamers having a forum to chat, you need to shut up. And if you just play it off as you’re playin around and I should lighten up I don’t want to hear it.
Well, at least Kim was mildly entertaining. :P LOL
I see Sony has responded to Kim_Naroz with their own viral marketer on this site.
"So compared to PS3's runaway Blu-ray success and steadily rising videogame market presence, what does xbox 360 have? "
Wow - where to start? How can your videogame market presence be described as "steadily rising" when your sales are actually going down year on year, while your competition sees its sales increase year-on-year? In case you don't understand those implications, DForce, that means that Sony's market share is decreasing as the PS3's lifecycle goes on - not increasing.
Regarding Blu-Ray, the important numbers you are citing are projections, not hard numbers. The statistical spin is just that - spin. It's easily to increase 320% from almost nothing. Studios like Warner Brothers have openly questioned the viability of the format and called this year the make or break year for the format before deciding whether to abandon support for it entirely.
Personally, I hope Blu-Ray holds on a few more years as I'm a sucker for buying new shiny things and have nearly 50 Blu-Ray's in my collection, to date. However, I have no false illusions regarding it's current success or long-term viability.
Finally, what 360 has is the largest and best overall quality game library on the market (which should be important for a game console), the best and most profitable online service in the market, a profitable game division and the satisfaction of knowing that it went from not being in the industry at all to dethroning the giant in the market (with more than a little help from Nintendo) in the space of one generation.
Man you're killing me. I was laughing to death 8D!!! Especially the last bit. And XBOX presence is not rising? LOL.
XBOX is currently making way more money for MS then PS for SONY. DORKS?!?!?! LOL
If you start drinking water from the ocean the sea level want rise so quickly. And it' will only be the first half of your success. The second half of your success is that you leave this forum. :) lol

"we have chipped away at the top end of the triangle"
Anyone for a game of boardroom bingo?
I don't even understand what his quote means. Is he suggesting that they are finally making it possible for even higher priced consoles?
