Sony says PS3 sales for 2008 are riding 30% higher than its internal projections. SCEA boss Jack Tretton has even warned that there could be shortages...

SCEA chief Jack Tretton said, "We are in good shape. We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year ... about 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number."

Sony yesterday issued a statement tat its targets would not be diminished by the global economic downturn.

Tretton also warned that there could be shortages this Holiday season, but said they would not be severe. "I'd say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending," he said.

And please let me assure you that this news has nothing to do with the recent 214% sales rise for xbox 360, no really, look into my eyes, not around the eyes, 3,2,1 you're under, you WILL believe me.

Translation: Wii has had shortages since launch, Xbox has had shortages this year in the US and in Japan. We better keep up with the Jones here.

grognard66, you are absolutely right.

This is pre-emptive damage control for next week's NPD numbers. "So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number" is meant to assuage their stockholders when these numbers get released. A "shortage", which Tretton used as an excuse before when their were plenty on the shelves (infamously promising to pay $100 for every PS3 people could find on a shelf until thousands of photos flooded in), will be their fallback line.

The continued mania over the Wii, combined with the significant boost the price drop will provide for 360 squeezes out PS3 in this economic environment at it's current price point. Also, there will be Blu-Ray players released this Holiday Season for $100-150 less than PS3 so they won't get that artificial hardware boost from movie buffs anymore (who buy the console strictly as a movie player, not a game machine).

I also imagine that Sony's projections weren't extremely high to begin with considering the PS3 sales' history. A few games might boost their hardware income though - and I still have this feeling Sony has some tricks up its sleeve... but we'll see.

I'd rather hear any of them say, "We plan to have plenty of consoles in the channel. Timmy won't wake up Christmas morning disappointed."

Normal parents don't have time to wait outside a store for 17 hours with the hopes that the console delivery fairy will arrive.

Of course, the PS3 is priced at the very high end of toys, so maybe that isn't as much of an issue?
