Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the PS3 Slim has sold one million units worldwide in three weeks, based on internal estimates.
The console was launched at the start of September at a new, reduced PS3 price point of £249 / €299 / $299 / 29,980 yen.
Yesterday SCEA boss Jack Tretton said that a 300 per cent jump in PS3 sales since the price cut was introduced could lead to console shortages.
Thing is that right now hardware sales are actually costing them money so until they turn those purchases into software sales on mass it's actually derogatory to them. They definately have the strongest software line-up and most hardcore friendly motion controller wand thingy coming though.
I dunno about Sony, as others have said even if they sell a million a month -which would be awesome- it will still take them 7 months to catch the xbox 360. Plus that's if the 360 doesn't sell another unit which isn't likely, I think that box is probs good for 3-4 million more worldwide. Then there's the potential mega flop that is the PSP GO coming. It's mad it's like Sony said at the beginning of this cycle, "look we were just too successful last gen lets just whittle away our audience for 3 years THEN try and get back to 138 million sales, Go!" I'll say this much though if they even come second ahead of Microsoft this gen I will give them all the credit in the world, but they'll have done it the hard way when it should have been as easy as just releasing the dam thing.
The PS3 single handedly won the Hd DVD/Blu Ray war, that will pay in the long run
We just have to accept Sony lost the plot with the PS3 and all reality it is a miracle they are still fighting. Any other company and they would have gone to the bins. Just as a re-cap, no rumble, no b/c, pricing structures at absurd levels, cell complications, bd-drive confusion, big, heavy un-game like looking system, by far the most ineffective advertising seen in a long while; it was just all wrong. On the other side you have a utterly monstrous competitor getting the cheque book out buying exclusivity left right and center, doing a superior job at marketing and hype building and spreading total FUD about the PS3 at launch and a year after. Of course the one year head start was crucial; but only through the inclusion of the biggest joke in video-gaming history; the RROD. Anyway all these combinations were quite disastrous and in these few years people were confused at the PS3. Hopefully now with re-branding, new SKU, new price point and new games things can go back to some basics; some decent foundations can be built and they can go from there. Of course it probably is too little too late now but I also think it is not like the old days anymore; if the PS3 goes onto sell big numbers it will still be regarded as a success in my opinion.
Awsome and Epic Win!
Epic Win!!
I agree that it has something to offer as a gaming device but I doubt Sony are seeing this as anything other then a major flop bearing in mind that they had sold 100 million PS2's 5 years into that generation but 3.5 years into this one they've sold 24 million max.
This is not true at all. The PS3 is not even three years old. Let us think. It came out in November 2006 in Japan and America ONLY. It only came out in Europe on March 2007. Wait until March 2010; then take a look at the PS3 install base and then ask whether they can double it. Based on pricing structures alone the answer will be yes unless core gaming basically stops in March 2010. The PS3 is just getting affordable now and its best games are coming out in 2010. Based on the last fiscal results the PS3 was at 23.8 million units as of June 2009. It is well above that figure now. People need to be clear on the facts.
Also there's other factors that didn't exist in the hey day of the PS2: The Wii phenomenon wasn't around offering populist gaming to the masses and Microsoft is no longer the new kid on the block.
The landscape has changed considerably and I don't think Sony will judge the success or failure of the PS3 based on figures the PS2 enjoyed when there wasn't anywhere near as much competition. I think all formats are enjoying great successes, including I think, the PS3 from now on - but I also think the numbers will be more modest.
Finally! Someone who has perspective and talks sense. Just because your previous console sold 100 million plus does not mean your next console is judged a disappointment if it manages to sell less. You need to take the market structure into account; and the fact is in terms of the core consoles they are actually in decline as an overall market per annum hardware shoved out into the market; i.e. 360 + PS3 is less than PS2, Xbox and GameCube per year. The market has VASTLY changed. Thus the the strategy of Sony to offer more than just games on their system (i.e. the total entertainment solution). I think the measure of the success of the PS3 will be just get as many Wi-Fi, Internet, Blu-Ray players into as many homes as possible as that is future proofing (so that even when games stop being made for the PS3; people will still be using it as a media server and buying content off the various networks that will be in place by then). This generation has been very complex; so the best thing to do is see how it plans out in a ten year lifecycle.
Not bad; let us see if this can continue into October, November, December and then on from there. Losing GT5 in December would be a 'cruel' blow to the SLIM. This is the time when it has to deliver on games now. Uncharted 2 cannot do it on its own.
Yeah, PS3 looked like it had a solid line-up for this Holiday Season at the beginning of the year, but with all the delays to various titles they only have one major release in the last 4 months of the year now. As much as I liked the original Uncharted, the game sold poorly, and while the sequel should do better it's quite a stretch to call it a major Holiday release.
I don't know about the EU, but in the US the GT franchise has lost it's aura and is more of a joke along the lines of Duke Nukem Forever now. Final Fantasy will definintely help PS3 in Japan, but unfortunately for Sony, Japan is inconsequential regarding home console sales these days.
as much as Uncharted 2 is my most awaited game, i have to agree with you. it's still a relatively unknown franchise. any Gran Turismo can push a Sony system; the latest GT would've sold tons of Sony's most powerful (and recently price-reduced) system.
FFXIII+Bundle+Dec will certainly help SCEJ (and worldwide), but not nearly as much as GT5 would've.
I think those sales figures are entirely possible with the release of the many triple A exclusives and there re invigorated ad campaign not to mention that they are now officially the best bang for your buck out of any of the current gen consoles free online, free wifi, bluray, I think were going to see these sales skyrocket throughout NA and Japan.
Just what I was thinking, but wish I had the balls to say it first without fear of the usual fanboy critisism that usually comes with such statements. They certainly don't go about things the way we would expect them to, but I suspect Sony knew what they were doing all along, especially with designing the upgradeable HD without voiding warranty.
While those numbers sound impressive, I'm hardly convinced that they're going to reach their "13 million sales in a year" target. That'd pretty much require a continuation of these sales week in, week out for a year?
they were able to 10M PS3s @ $399 last fiscal year during a recession and you don't think they can reach 13M now that the PS3's $299? geez...
Christmas is coming, and with the price cut and new slim model, it could be... well... Christmas for Sony.
