Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says that he’s heard from the Japanese and European retail sectors that Sony’s restricting the supply of current PS3 models.
“The retail commentary I’ve seen has come out of the UK. I have not seen at US retail. We heard Japanese retail a few weeks ago say they weren’t going to be getting any more PS3s after August 8, and now we’re starting to hear UK retail say they cannot re-order PS3s until month-end,” he told VG247.
The analyst said it was likely that Sony is clearing the retail channels as it prepares to launch a new model of the console and introduce a price cut.
“… That suggests there’ll be a model change. If Sony’s practice is the same as it was in the past, and the [PS3] Slim is more of a redesign of the components to drive down cost, then I think we will get a price cut.”
Numerous parties have suggested that Sony is readying to introduce a PS3 price cut, and all eyes will be on the company’s press conference at Gamescom next Tuesday.
Hear we go not going to bother after this, the "feature card" BD-Rom Drives & such...... Get a grip guys not EVERYONE needs wireless(in fact most people I know port driect to modem) , not everyone buys/wants blu-rays. Just as not everyone finds if difficult to find the £40per year for xbox live. Not everyone crys when they send there console away and gets it back in a fortnight. And finaly not everyone wants to put a screw driver to there console and mess about with it. It's the reason I perfer consoles over PC's for games.
Oh and thanks for quote, shame you missed and no free online value for money comment and your post for the most part was that. Value is something you place on a item, that does not mean everyone thinks the same Top Dollar.
Do I think the PS3 is better value for money yes, but thats only when you look at the tick boxes as to what is bulit in. It does not stop me having the opinion that PSN is a souless experiance. More akin to the days of early on-line PC gaming ,when I was wooed just by the fact I was playing against people. Today I want and expect more and Sonys service in my eyes offers a dated service. So I play my Xbox 360 instead and no flashy gizmos in the box will change that, unless PSN get's a much needed kick in the arse. And gives ME the experiance I expect today.
Not everyone crys when they send there console away and gets it back in a fortnight.
Mediocrity: It takes a lot less time and most people won't notice the difference until it's too late.
Excellent!
More speculation as to whether Sony will drop the price.. I'll be waiting to hear it straight from the horses mouth.
It would be cool to see a slimmer version on the market from Under £250. But I won't be holding my breath.
great...... a story on a ps3 price drop turns into RROD flame. great job guys one question if the 360 never had RROD. what would you be able make any real negative comments on the 360?
most likey no....
(and please no free on-line, value for money comments this is not gamespot/IGN)
to be honest let sleeping RROD's lie, it's not as if Sony never had a scandel ie: shoddy laptop battries & and music CD's with vrius on them.
And,good buddy..totally overblown claims of system performance backed with blatantly CG pre-renderd sequences. Over hyping their tech is nothing new to phony(remember their "emotion engine" and its "seven times the power of pentium 3"?) ps2 significantly underperformed in some areas when compared to Dreamcast....Graphicaly!(Aint saying Dreamcast was the over all better graphical performer) To simply put it,i cant trust phoney and their tech claimes any more.Just why is every game i can think of on 360 capable of running at 1080p yet the same cannot be said of phoney pork station3? What with its cell proccessor rendering in 1080p was supposed to be a "key streangth" of ps3. lets talk 4 the ps3 fan boys..."but the developers are begining to learn to code for it" Nah i dont want to hear that cammel crap! ps2 was out what,2 years before xbox original dropped yet first gen xbox games looked better in every way.that was a demonstration of power. Ghost busters was developed with the streangth of each plat form in mined yet by the developers own admission,ps3 ghost buster resolution is only at 75percent of 360's version. The power of cell is so far has i can tell,NON EXISTANT!
Will people ever get over the whole Sony Vs. Microsoft thing I wonder?
You can list the pro's and con's until your fingers bleed. You can quote me the amount of teraflops that each CPU can handle or the amount of games that run 1080p or which has best GFX board. You could even tell us how the PS3 has a more intensive development learning curve compared with that of 360. But! In the grand scheme of things, does it really make much difference which console you own?
It's all about the games!! The machines themselves just provide a platform for those games to run. If the games are engaging then what difference does it make what they're running on? Ghostbusters The Video Game is a really bad example, Didn't Atari just want to get the game out there and playable? Which it is, very! Although more than a little rough around the edges. You could argue that the texture quality on the PS3 version isn't as good in comparison with 360. But does that detract from the fact that it a thoroughly enjoyable and playable game? Did it discourage PS3 sales that greatly? Having limited appeal, I would be worry more about! Not the texture quality!
Every company is guilty in some form of stretching the truth with regards to showing their product in the best light.. Doesn't matter who you are! In a highly competitive marketplace such as the games industry, hyperbolised claims are the norm. At the moment there are plenty of great looking games but it's often the simple and cheap that make the most surprising, entertaining and fun additions to the gaming collection Trails HD, The Last Guy and Rocket Riot being good examples.
Dreamcast was a great machine let's not sell it short. There is some great games produced on that machine for sure, but you can't really compare it to PS2. I wouldn't say large scale adventure games like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus underperformed graphically. They're actually pushing the PS2 to the limit. There is certainly nothing comparable on the Dreamcast, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Savegehenry, your response is the most enjoyable i have ever read! It's well thought out, and not that i would want to,i couldnt argue against any of your points(though it does help that i share your thoughts regarding comparing platforms). But for me, arguing which has the best graphics ect is just fun for me! it takes me back to my youth when i just didnt know any better (back then it was SNES VS MEGA DRIVE and that eara was WAY more ha em "hotly debated" often getting physical! (Well at my school, folkes just wanted an excuse) Well my point is this, if art is art, why do people who claim to like art, debate things like who's the best artist of the eara and so fourth? Whilst i agree that it is "pointless" to debate about platforms,I think that ultimately its a symptom of being passionate about games and therefore, the platform debate saga is going to continue for has long has people remain passionate. Regarding the games you mentioned, shadow of the colossus and ico,i really couldnt imagine the grand scale nature colossus being replicated on dream-cast,but i would say with a degree of certainty that what could be achieved would have richer textures due to the higher texture memory available! Damn, there I go again! Sorry mate lol
Wait... I could swear ravenor just said this isn't Gamespot/IGN.
How is "you have to pay a shitload of money to get only some of the same features as a PS3" not a valid point?
one question if the 360 never had RROD. what would you be able make any real negative comments on the 360?
There are a number of things:
- You need to pay to play online
- No Wi-Fi as standard
- Limited HDD capacity i.e. 120GB
- You can't upgrade the HDD yourself
- No region free gaming
- No Blu-ray drive
- The system doesn't play host to: The Last Guardian
- The system is shit in terms of reliability, RROD isn't it's only problem!
...to name a few.
Xbox360 is £160 with a hard disk or there about. The features have to be scaled down.. But what you are getting is a console that can keep up with what is supposedly the high end machine. When you consider what your actually paying for, then you see it run the same game at the same quality as on the Sony machine (sometimes better). You get to thinking, even with the dreaded rings(that you could fall victim too) you're still getting a bargain.
XBox Live is £39.99 a year, that £3.33 a month. Shit! if Sony could match that and provide the sort of service Xbox users experience, then I'd be first in the queue. PSNetwork is great as a free service, but most of my online multiplayer nightmares at the moment is with the Sony machine. The Xbox party system makes it easy to host private chat and also enable effortless joining and hosting games.
I thought it was more the official Microsoft product like Halo and Lost Odyssey that were locked up?
Recently added Ghostbusters to my collection, got it early from the States region free NTSC, runs nice, plays on Live, looks great.
XBox Live is £39.99 a year, that £3.33 a month.
Yeah, but anyone would rather play online for free (it's the most important aspect if you're playing online), you can on the PC, PS3, fuck even the Wii is free.
Why should you pay £39.99 a year/£3.33 a month, you already pay for a service (it's called your broadband connection), so why would anyone in their right mind pay for another service.
MS are all pulling your leg!
I feel the subscription is a small price to pay. certainly not breaking the bank. I've always been happy to pay £3 a month and would be more than happy to pay the same again to Sony. But then you're talking to the guy who still has a subscription to Edge when he could be reading everything for free on the Internet.
Who in their right mind? Look, to each his own and all that, we've obviously got different agenda's, it doesn't feel like my legs are being pulled, many people are willing Live Gold members. It's not like payment is compulsory either, you can still have a Silver account and download demos and take advantage of certain features of Live. The only things you won't be doing is hosting or using Party mode or Private chat which is really what the subscription covers. In monetary terms an Xbox Live subscription is much cheaper then getting a 10 man teamspeak server.
My broadband package which is less than £25 a month which has Xbox360, PS3 and PC running of it. So that's a whole lot of gaming online for under £30. If Sony decided that a premium service was the way to go I'd probably sign up for that. If it meant that all the horrors that exist with Sony online experience would disappear, it's very hit and miss. Some games work fine others not at all just, go the point now that most games I'm likely to play online will get bought for the Xbox360. At least with Xbox Live you know what you're getting and know that it's reliable.. Even with all that horrible green branding and huge Icons and the awful metro sexual avatars.
It seem that either the rings of death or the subscription service are the main bugbear for the Sony fraternity. It's a fairly narrow minded view considering how powerful box you get for your £150. What is it that's really going on here? I think it only extends as far as simple prejudices' against Microsoft for being...... Well... Microsoft. The Things is, I thought we got over the whole format war bollocks back in the 90's.
Noble effort, Savagehenry, but you're wasting your time. Guys like Top, Wall-E, Arron, Rider are too close minded to ever consider the fact that someone may see things differently than them - let alone ever change their minds. Their loss, as they are only hurting themselves by missing out on the best online community and game library in the industry right now.
I have two Gold subscriptions (one for each 360 I own) and would gladly pay Sony and Nintendo the same amount each year if they matched the community and feature set as Live (impossible, of course, since they have a backlog of titles that wouldn't be compatible even if these companies ever did catch up).
I've been a PC gamer decades (literally) longer than I've been Live subscriber and can say from personal experience that online pc gaming is a chaotic, buggy mess - nothing like the cohesive experience of Live.
Hey, this is my FIRST comment on this story. I own an XBOX and a PS3 so I'm able to make an informed choice about what I think are the strengths and weaknesses of each system and paying £39.99 a year or £399.90 over the supposed ten year life cycle of the 360 is a very big glaring weakness of the MS offering. It actually means that the 360 is the most expensive console ever produced it's just that part of its cost is spread out. The 360 does have some great games though and it'd get away with the online surcharge by virtue of that library if the quality of the machine was up to scratch, which it isn't.
The PS3 however has under-performed generally on multiplatform titles and has lagged behind on the feature side of its online offering it is however catching up and frankly for around £0 a year or £0 over the life cycle of the console you can forgive it lagging slightly behind in this area.
However as you only own one console you probably now feel like I've attacked a relative with a steak knife and that's why you get so upset when some one dares to point out that the 360 isn't the second coming of the Commodore Amiga.
Sorry, ArronC07 - I didn't see this when you first posted it. I've stated numerous times that I've had a PS3 since 12/31/06. Now that Sony is finally starting to incorporate online features you can even look at some of the games and trophies I have - same PSN username as here (grognard66).
Thanks Grognard66, You restored my faith in humanity.
I feel very similarly... If Microsoft could do the same with the "Games for Windows" service as what they've done with "Xbox Live" and by making developers use it through compulsory licensing would make things a lot better.
Unlike other people I've never seen the problem with paying for something that you are going to get use from. Even if you don't want to pay that's fine too, you can just have a basic account.. I think it's a brilliant way of dealing with the issue, giving the users the choice. The only reason I can see why it's getting so much shtick is because it's Microsoft's idea. It's extremely popular and well implemented, who could fault them for that.
Nobody really minds paying the subscription to World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy online. If you don't want to pay then go play something else. but bemoaning the fact that Microsoft or other companies are somehow doing us a disservice by asking for £3 a month is ludicrous.
So many times have I sat there using the Xbox to host private chat whilst in-game on the PS3, because the Sony box is incapable of handle such a simple request. I sit there thinking I'd gladly pay for a private in-game chat hosting facility. Communication is surely one for the most important aspects for online play. Yet Sony have made a right mess of it, should have been there first priority.
The 360 has take a massive lead this generation. Quality of Service and Price is the name of the game. It's that simple. Sony need to up their game!!
- No region free gaming
wrong.
Bollocks, trying to say you can play Death Smiles, Mushihimesama, Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta, etc on that PAL/NTSC US system.
No, therefore you're talking shit!
It's up to the publisher whether to put region protection on 360 titles and all certainly do (with the odd exception on some games).
On the PS3 all games are region-free, it's a given!
Well done for being cool, knowing a few names of some obscure Japanese games that a small percentage of English speaking gamers have heard of.. For a start if you were that into Japanese games wouldn't you just get a modchip ?
I have a imported copy of Blade storm.. Yeah it's a laugh to hack and slash about, but do I know what the hell is going on.... No!! Do I just button bash through the menu and all that strategic stuff.. Yes!! I also have a sealed copy of Namco X Capcom just because I can.
If say, you're were to import your copy of Killzone2 or Burnout Paradise, you'd be damn annoyed when the DLC wouldn't work because your game was out of region. Sony have their controls also. The only way I can see you having a truly region free PS3 is to hold PSN accounts in all regions and to buy the appropriate DLC for the specific region, for which you would have to have a credit card registered in that region or good luck finding redeem codes.
The only way I can see you having a truly region free PS3 is to hold PSN accounts in all regions and to buy the appropriate DLC for the specific region, for which you would have to have a credit card
What i'm saying is (for the last time) most 360 games are region locked, the PS3 on the otherhand is completely region-free just like the GBA, you can play any title, from anywhere in the world, regardless of if you have a PAL/NTSC US/NTSC JP system.
Also, regarding DLC, like it's hard to create an account for specific region.!. I've got a UK/US/Asia and JPN accounts.
Prepaid Network Cards are piss easy to pick up...i mean this is the net we're talking about here for fuck sake!
The 360 region-free...not quite!
Well done you for filling in an online form! The vast majority of mainstream users aren't going to be doing that. Happy to wait for region specific release dates or content and only sign up for the network in their home territory. Only the hardcore have the time and inclination to be bothered about getting games early or that must have Japanese side scrolling shoot 'em up from PSNJP.
If you really were that determined to play games out of region for the Xbox 360, believe me, there are ways. But generally most people wait. Sony are a bit more free and easy with their licensing to other regions. Which is great news for PS3 as you have said. But multi region gaming isn't really that big of a deal when month in, month out, quality product is being release to Europe and other territories alike.
Its bit of nonsensical argument, Nearly all Xbox360 games that are released initially to NTSC regions do get converted to PAL and shipped to Europe usually within a couple of month or so Global release date would obviously be a whole lot better, but hey! You can't have everything.
So small victory for you, Not quite region free!! But, Does it matter? No! Is it an important and integral part of the Xbox360 experience.... NO!
you said their was no region free gaming on 360. ill say it again. Wrong.
http://forum.xbox-sky.com/xbox360_regional_compatibility_guide/
I wouldn't call a few games region free gaming on the 360, it isn't exactly standard is it!
Every game is region-free on the PS3, i think you misunderstand the term region-free.
Good luck playing Death Smiles, Mushihimesama, Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta (and others) on yer PAL/NTSC US system.
Thanks, good luck in your efforts to be funny.
This is even less important than semantics.
Unless, like me, your moving to america and wanna know which of your games will play on a US 360.
On the PS3 all games are region-free, it's a given!
Fucking A - If that wasn't the case i wouldn't have: Demon Soul's, Afrika, Aquanaut's Holiday, Initial D Extreme Stage, etc to play on my PAL system.
lol, MilesMayhem just got owned.
Folks sadly are always going to find fault with a rival piece of hardware-All i can say is, If your so blinkered as to slag of a rival machine then A-Your going to missing out on some amazing titles and B-Just see how stale gaming would get without decent competition. I own a 360+ps3 use and enjoy both.
Had friends who`s 360`s Red ringed, who`s PS3`s had the Blu-ray drives fail on, i went through 4 Dreamcasts due to the reset issue, 3 Psones due to the lens warping etc etc. Nothing is fool proof.
The things generate heat, having moving parts. What do people expect?
spot on thevulture. I only have a PS3 at the moment, but I will be getting an XBox360 and a Wii, because I love games. I want to play Mario Galaxy, Halo3, Left for Dead 1&2, Gears, Lost Winds, Drakes Fortune 2 etc. All the platforms have got stonking games - they all have some crap too. This 'mine is bigger that yours' has been going on since I was at School, just over C64/Spectrum/BBC.
Every time I play a decent game on the PS3 or on a friends Wii/360 I can't help but grin. I just don't understand how people get so hung up on platforms - haven't they seen what they can do with games these days? Bloody brilliant!
Didn't they just recently start making them for a lower cost? There's probably a transitional phase going on at the factories or something.
“The retail commentary I’ve seen has come out of the UK. I have not seen at US retail."
Well, when no one buys them in the states, you won't see them dry up ever. At least Sony has their fallback option.
Could be worse!
The above picture denotes the reason i wouldn't buy a 360, period!
What makes it even worse is that MS knew about RROD, yet they ignored the signs and still put out the system anyway.
MS should have ceased production of the console and resolved the matter, but they didn't, hence the disaster that is the 360 system.
Is this the first time you have heard of consoles breaking? This red ring of death thing is nothing new. Can none of you remember having to put their PS1's on their side to load a game? I went through 3 PS1's, 2 PS2's, 3 Xbox Original, my Gamecube died but I couldn't be bothered to replace that. The PS3's disc drive is giving me gyp. The most reliable console I have owned is the Dreamcast, or possibly the humble Megadrive.
Honestly. Give the red ring of death thing a rest.
Honestly. Give the red ring of death thing a rest.
Wow, not everyone is willing to forgive MS over RROD, and yes, why should they?!
Saying "Give the red ring of death thing a rest." is like you condoning their actions.
And yeah, i personally don't own a 360 due to the RROD also.
I'll never overlook the RROD scandal!
Oh, I'm not condoning it at all my friend. It is a shitter that it happens. But to ignore all the great games just cause it might red ring on you? I think it's worth the risk. If it does red ring, send it back, it doesn't take long to get it replaced.
Sorry but the 360 has been easily been 10 times worse than any other console. Even Sony sorted out the PSX relatively quickly.
As far as I'm concerned there's no real evidence that MS has done anything to properly remedy the RROD even now.
As far as I'm concerned there's no real evidence that MS has done anything to properly remedy the RROD even now.
That's true, take a look at the link below, the first post was created on Apr 27 2007 regarding RROD, the latest post on the issue is on the Aug 13 2009, only two days ago (at the time of typing).
MS have fucked up with RROD, and they're still fucking up even today.
The system is a joke!
http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?showtopic=157552
For me it was 3 PS1s, 2 PS2s, 2 original Xboxes and i'm now on my 4th 360, while this might sound bad for the 360 it should be noted that i had to buy replacements for everything else but have yet to spend a penny on getting my 360 replaced, as all the others died within two years of purchase i guess that makes the 360 my longest lasting drive based (my Jaguar, Megadrive etc all still work, at least they did the last time i turned them on) console without the need to spend more money.
My longest lasting disc based console has to be the 3DO. It's amazingly still going. Not that I ever play it! Perhaps that's why it still works.
SNAP! My 3DO was working up until november of last year, and getting played on a regular basis (star fighter, which is much more graphically impressive than the star fighter 3000 which was on ps1,Samurai showdown 1,super street fighter 2 turbo and the original and my favorite Need for speed) but was MURDERD by my wife throwing her pyjamas over it not realising it was still on : ( It still powers up but the CD drive dont spin the disk at all. I wonder if it is possible to get a generic cd drive and get it in there? or any computer repair places that could fix it? Any suggestions welcome good folkes!
Of the consoles you listed, the only one which had a serious reliability issue was the early PS1. But while Sony quickly redesigned the drive in the PS1 to cure the issue, I think what people are alluding to in this thread is that Microsoft stil hasn't addressed the red ring failure. The failure rate itself is rather staggering and offering an extended warranty doesn't constitue fixing the problem. It almost makes me wonder if these failures benefit Microsoft in some way.
I've kept every console I've bought throught the years (including the one's you've mentioned) and have never had a problem with any of them and take them out regularily to revisit some oldies. It's hard to justify the purchase of a new console and many games for if I'm not certain it will still work 5-20 years from now. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this way.
On another note... I think an even bigger issue here is how many consoles you've "went through"! What are you doing with these things??
Well my first PS1 died from excessive Gran Turismo 2 sessions, second died from too much Music 2000. My third one still works, perfectly I might add. Perhaps I have one of the redesigned ones you mentioned. My first PS2 was quite old when it died and I think San Andreas was too much for it and killed it in the end! Second one was a slim and the disc drive just failed on it. To be fair, me and my flat mate were constantly on the game so they did get used a lot, and like anything, they get worn out in time.
On to the 360. I am on my second one and it constantly red rings on me. The solution - unplug it for 10 minutes and it's right as rain for a couple days. Been like this for about 18 months! I can't bring myself to buy another one, I'm still reeling from buying my PS3!
I understand the failure rates on 360's are pretty high, everyone I know who owns one has had to replace it. My point being that this isn't the first console to suffer from it, although you are right, it is probably the worst.
On to the 360. I am on my second one and it constantly red rings on me. The solution - unplug it for 10 minutes and it's right as rain for a couple days. Been like this for about 18 months!
Great stuff.
