A new report suggests that Sony will deliver “a completely new system” for PS3 with the release of firmware 3.0 later this year.
VG247 claims to have learnt of a host of major new PS3 features that will represent “a huge overhaul” of the console, noting that sources referred to the update as similar to the New Xbox Experience “in some respects.”
Firmware 3.0 will enable background downloading of all patches and introduce a reputation and griefing system, according to the site, which promises to reveal further “significant” features in due course.
Sony has since moved to label the report as “completely untrue” and “wild speculation."
It has also recently been rumoured that an updated PlayStation Store featuring PSP apps will be revealed at Gamescom in August, and could be made publicly available before the year’s end.
Sony's right, it is wild speculation that they'd include something as ridiculous as background downloads and a reputation and grieving system. I'm glad they shot that rumor down.
I think the XMB is fine, very professional looking and simple. I hope it is not changed just for the sake of change. It is unified across Sony's range also, on their TV's and the PSP. However firmware improvements are always welcome, and I think Sony has done a good job here since the PS3's launch with many updates. The last few months have been 'dry' however leading me to believe something big may be on the horizon. However I do not believe it will be anything related to this article, which seems to be wild speculation and FUD.
A couple of things they could add are support for every digital camera (and not just Sony's), full I-pod support... and I always wondered what it would be like if they expanded that Earth screensaver (hooking it up to Google Maps or something like that) and give it some functionality. ;)
I quite like the crossbar thingy.
Yay, so now they'll have most of the features of a launch day 360
Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. How long does MS have to kick their butt before Japan will take the reins off the team in San Diego?
Hmm, from what I hear, Sony is happy with their XMB.
