Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has launched its PlayStation Network video delivery service (VDS) in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, enabling users to download thousands of films to PS3 and PSP.
Over 2,000 titles are available to rent (from €1.99) or buy (from €7.99), with many offered in high definition. Content providers include 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros and a series of local market studios.
Progressive downloading allows viewers to start watching a film shortly after downloading begins, according to Sony. Rented movies need to be watched within 14 days and, once playback is started, films will be available for 48 hours. Purchased movies are stored on the PS3 hard drive.
Sony said that the PSN VDS will be updated with new content on a weekly basis and that the service will roll out in other European territories in 2010.
Impressive stuff. Finally Sony delivers on its VOD promises. This thing is going to become huge this time next-year. In fact I bet it will be market leading and obtain exclusives from Sony Pictures ...
The fact you get a free copy to play on the PSP is fantastic. I just wonder if we will get local TV content put onto this service...
Is it possible to move a purchased movie to an external hard drive?
Computer says no.
Looks like a good reason to get my 1Tb hard drive now.
Hoorah! I might give this a try, or at the very least, a browse.
