Sony’s PSP topped the Japanese hardware sales chart during the week ended January 10.
The system was the only platform to record a weekly rise as total unit sales fell from 606,000 to 401,000.
Wii sales more than halved, but the console managed to remain ahead of PS3, which saw a 50,000 drop in unit sales.
DSi sales edged those of the portable’s big brother, DSi LL, while DS Lite outsold Xbox 360 and PS2 combined.
Despite the ongoing success of PSP Slim, PSPgo continued to languish at the bottom of the hardware chart, moving less than 3,000 units during the week in question.
A large portion of PSP’s weekly success can no doubt be attributed to the strong launch of Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. The title sold 446,000 copies in two days to debut atop the weekly software chart, dethroning New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Weekly hardware sales (previous week):
PSP - 145,682 (132,911)
Wii – 76,772 (163,855)
PS3 - 61,591 (114,368)
DSi - 50,178 (92,461)
DSi LL - 45,221 (70,643)
DS Lite - 10,067 (17,388)
Xbox 360 - 5,461 (6,878)
PS2 - 3,092 (4,023)
PSPgo - 2,841 (3,903)
Ouch, one realises just how poorly received the PSPgo is in Japan, Nitendo have 3 handhelds on the market, one of which is older than the PSPgo (the DS Lite) and it outsold the go by 4 to 1.
Is the fall in overall sales meant to be a surprise or am I missing something, it is a tread seen most years in the 2nd week after Christmas because people are going back to work/school and have spent most their money over Christmas.
Can anyone explain how the DSi LL is doing so well, what is it that is so appealing to the Japanese market. If anyone lauched a version 3.5 of a system that was bigger and bulkier they would be laughed out the door but somehow Nintendo have gotten away with it.
It's designed for older people, not traditionally fans of things being as small and fiddly as possible.
The PSP GO has been poorly received everywhere, I wouldn't be surprised to see that the DS Lite is battering it in the UK as well.
Sales are very close between Sony and Nintendo in Japan. Both Companies are doing exceptionally well. Sony have a strong Q1 2010 line-up for both the PS3 and PSP so things should be interesting.
