PSP outsold DSi by just 213 units in Japan to narrowly top the hardware chart for the week ended April 12.
Meanwhile, PS3 continued its momentum built through March - when it was the country’s top-selling home console – to again outsell its rivals.
Weekly sales were down across the board excluding those of Xbox 360, which rose by more than 2,000 units.
Were DS Lite sales factored into the equation then Nintendo sold the most portable systems during the week in question, but Sony can nevertheless feel happy about its performance in Japan after its relatively poor March hardware sales figures Stateside.
Here’s the full weekly sales rundown, courtesy of Media Create.
PSP – 40,886
DSi – 40,673
PS3 – 16,701
Wii – 13,349
Xbox 360 – 10,134
DS Lite – 6,869
PS2 – 4,531
The 360 boost came because of the release of a new Arcade model.
With FinalFantasyVIIAC-BD now out, the PS3 should stay king of the hill till MonsterHunter comes out on the Wii. Will be very interesting to see how MonsterHunter performs. On the consoles it was never as succesful as on the PSP (it's still in the Top10!!!! Incredible legs)
The PSP is getting a lot of software support in Japan. When are the games gonna get localized in the US and Europe?
Good post, those are some good points.
With the ever decreasing cost of stand-alone BluRay players, how much of PS3's continued success can we attribute to the FFVII movie? There's got to be something else - I just can't work out what it is. I'm glad they're doing better though, Sony really seemed intent on screwing everything up for a long while there.
It will be interesting to see what Monster Hunter Tri does to the sales of the Wii, seeing as it could be argued that the franchise "saved" the PSP.
I can't believe the 360 is closing in on the Wii...in Japan and with no major releases if I'm not mistaken. Is the Wii craze really coming to an end now? It appears it MAY be slowing down in the US too, but it's been just one month so it's too early to call.
How is the Wii slowing down in the US?
Also, Wii is the only current gen system that hasn't had AAA, system moving game released yet this year in Japan - Monster Hunter G and Wii Sports Resort can't come soon enough.
I cannot explain the 360 bump though... that is strange.
Well, you could argue that it has slowed down, and you can argue it hasn't. The Wii for March of 2009 had a 16% decline in conosle sales over March of 2008 BUT for the first quarter in 2009 it has done better than it did in the first quarter of 2008. You could also argue it's a market trend right now for the U.S. but the 360's March 2009 numbers were a 26% increase over March of 2008's. So, it's not so clear cut the Wii is slowing down, but it did for March. If there's declines for April and May, then I think it may be safe to say the Wii really is slowing down. It's had isolated drops before so maybe that's all this is.
Exactly. You really can't make an argument that it's slowing down based on a drop in sales from one month to the next - especially given that last year, an AAA game (SSBB) launched. The same thing happened to the 360 in September 2008 - it was down huge YoY because of the Halo 3 launch in September 2007. You have to take those types of things into context. And more importantly, you have to point a steady trend.
Also, Xbox360 is down from 391k in February to 330k in March, yet no one is saying "XBox360 is slowing down". I think that it's only because people just want the Wii to slow down... It's true!
Sales will probably decrease next month as well. There's no major software releasing and it's just normal trending for the Spring/Summer. Not a precursor for the apocalpyse! As long as Wii sales YTD are stronger then the previous year's numbers and it's selling better than the HD Twins combined - I think all allegations that Wii sales are slowing are just pretty desperate.
I think I mentioned something in my original post that it probably is too early to call. Yeah, I'm aware of everything you mentioned.
The 360 did drop from Feb's numbers, but over the same month last year it increased and like the Wii, has done better 1st quarter 2009 than it did first quarter 2008. The 360 just stands out this month as the only console to not only not have a decrease from the same month last year but posted a 26% increase.
But Ken, you have to realize the Wii WILL eventually slow down. Nothing is invincible. I think it's only natural the Wii will slow down to human-like numbers, but not because anything Nintendo is doing wrong, but demand can't stay that high forever. I wouldn't be shocked if the Wii's numbers plateau around 400k a month this year (still great numbers by any means, just not super-human Wii typical numbers).
Just my guess.
C'mon Nick, obviously it will slow down eventually. I'm just sayin' the this year isn't the year based on YTD sales.
Hmm, fair enough. I can't argue that lol.
Only 6000+ units difference between all 3 home consoles is quite unusual. Makes anyone a potential "mover and shaker" week-to-week.
