The Sony PSP continues to reign as the best selling hardware platform in Japan, according to the latest Media Create charts on hardware sales for the week ending July 27th.

The handheld managed to move 67,452 units—down from the previous week’s 74,024 but still quite up from two weeks ago. This trend could possibly attributed to the cooling sales boost provided by newly released metallic blue PSP models.

The DS managed its best performance in two weeks, selling 56,698 units. Dragon Quest V for the DS is currently the best-selling title in the region. The Xbox 360 also posted modest gains as well, a jump which has been connected to anticipation for Namco Bandai’s Tales of Vesperia. PS3 and PS2, on the other hand, posted slight declines.

PSP - 67,452
Nintendo DS - 56,968
Wii - 41,024
PlayStation 3 - 10,692
PlayStation 2 - 9,291
Xbox 360 - 4,941

PSP doing well indeed, already at 2/3rds of last year at the halfway mark. It looks to me like the PSP is definitely gaining steam over time. At four years in, now is better than ever. Does this provide a model that the PS3 might one day follow?

Dragon Quest Sales History--here's a fun chart we did using the main series as benchmarks. What I notice is a continued surge in popularity as the series gets bigger and better with each installment. While the remakes are doing VERY well on the DS, can IX continue the trend?

PS3 didn't so much "decline" as it did return to form, disappointingly. 10k seems to be its comfort zone from now until the holiday season. The Wii is hitting 40k week with little more than Wii Fit as a sales driver. It's pretty unreal.
