Sony’s PS3 business recorded increased sales during the third financial quarter ended December 31, 2009, in contrast to the performance of its PSP and PS2 operations.
Quarterly PS3 hardware sales were up 2 million units to 6.5 million, while PS3 software sales increased from 40.8 million units to 47.6 million.
But PSP hardware sales were down from 5.1 million units to 4.2 million, with software sales falling 500,000 units to 15 million.
PS2 hardware sales also declined, from 2.5 million units to 2.1 million, while software sales dropped dramatically, from 29.7 million units to 11.2 million.
Total PlayStation software sales are expected to reach 200 million units during the full business year.
The performance of PSP and PS2 meant sales in the games business decreased overall, but profitability was relatively unchanged, “mainly due to an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware”, Sony said.
