Around half of the staff at Radical Entertainment will be let go as newly formed megapublisher Activision Blizzard looks to streamline its operations by cutting two projects currently in development at the studio.

"Activision Blizzard is committed to making the best games possible and has elected at this time to reduce the number of titles that Radical is developing from four games to two," Leah Rubin, Radical's vice-president of human resources, told The Vancouver Sun. "Therefore, we will be proportionately reducing the size of our studio."

Radical's Crash Bandicoot and Prototype (pictured) projects will survive the chop, while the Scarface franchise will be among those canceled.

Laid-off employees will be offered “a number of tools and resources to help them find new employment”, Radical said.

And if they'd merged with Vivendi Universal instead of Activision, they'd be making layoffs left and right as well.

I hope the Radical folks and projects find new homes quickly.

I think I'll just be buying Ubisoft games this year as I always have throughout time.

Why?

Ubisoft actually nurtures and grows the games industry by using its profits for good things like hiring and building new studios.

They have some of the healthiest studios around and are committed to more things than just profits and consolidating.
