Sega said Wednesday that it has commissioned U.K.-based studio Rebellion to develop the tentatively-titled Aliens vs. Predator. Rebellion is the same studio that developed the 1994 cult classic, Alien vs. Predator, which appeared on ill-fated Atari Jaguar. The studio also developed the 1999 PC and Mac follow-up, Aliens vs. Predator.
The new Aliens vs. Predator is slated for release in 2010.
Sega previously announced other games in the Aliens universe: Aliens: Colonial Marines by Gearbox Software and an Alien RPG by Obsidian Entertainment.
In November 2008, development of Aliens: Colonial Marines was rumored to be hindered by staff cuts at Gearbox, although the studio had reiterated the title is still under development.
However, a cryptic statement in Sega's press release today said, "With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, Sega has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio."
Sega West CEO Naoya Tsurumi added, "By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, Sega will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans.”
Sega did say that Rebellion's 2010 title will be the first game to hit in the new Alien series.
A rep for the publisher told Edge that she could not comment on the status of the other two Alien titles from Sega.
