One of Australia’s biggest game distributors, Red Ant, has gone into administration, according to a company listing on the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

Red Ant is the Sydney-based independent games distributor for a number of publishers, striking wholesale deals with the likes of Konami, Besthesda, Midway and Capcom for releases across Australia.

Deloitte Touche has been appointed the company’s administrator, and is working on selling the business as a going concern. Red Ant is still trading, though it is said that resources are limited.

Red Ant had been suffering as a business from the weakening of the Australian dollar against international currencies.

Konami had recently signed an exclusive distribution deal with Red Ant back in November, ending its long-term partnership with previous distributor Atari (due to Namco Bandai acquiring a 34 percent share of Infogrames).

A number of release dates in Australia are now in doubt. Australia’s scheduled release of two high-profile Capcom titles – Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 – are now looking suspect as its distributor struggles to continue as a going concern.

Calls to Red Ant, at the time of going to press, were left unanswered.

I would have thought selling games for $120AUD was quite a good buffer against a falling Aussie dollar.
