David Reeves believes that Sony is “on target” with its plan to turn a profit from the firm’s hardware and software businesses.

Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, recently commented on the official PlayStation website that "the most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money.”

“This is a pledge that was made last March,” he continues, “and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve.” Reeves added that once Sony see a return on its investments, the company will be able to “move forward at a rate of knots.”

Though Reeves didn’t directly claim that Sony would be enjoying such profit this year, he did say that 2009 “promises to be a very exciting year for PS3”, citing upcoming titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2. He added that the PSN’s music and video download service will be available in the UK towards the end of the year.

Analysts have recently claimed that the PS3’s components now only cost some $50 more than the console’s $399 retail price tag in the US.

They've got the best line-up of 2009, with the Wii a close second, followed by the 360.

The 360 has the weakest line-up for 2009 out of all the firms. If you don't like Halo, Gears, or PC type games in general, then you're pretty much fucked as it's all you get on the 360 i.e. shooters, shooters, shooters and you guessed it, more shooters.

This comment is a bit out of place here, maybe you meant to post in one of the "Year Ahead" articles where it would be more in line with the content?

It very much remains to be seen what the full 360 exclusive line up looks like for 2009, there's only Halo Wars and Halo: ODST that's confirmed. I guess the MMORPG Champions Online, will be an exclusive due to circumstance, at least for 2009. GDC will probably be when the full scope of the line up will be revealed.

@whisky - I guess you don't realize that PS3 has the highest percentage of shooters on it's console this gen? Also, the 360 has the highest percentage of RPG's this gen.

Face it, 360 is the PS2 of this generation. 360 has the broadest game portfolio this gen. That's a fact, not an opinion.

Whether you prefer the PS3 exclusives is subjective and you're entitled to it. But you embarrass yourself with this complete disregard for facts. Check out the entire game library for each of the systems and rethink your comment about 360 being only for shooters.

The 360 wasn't really any different before '09. The 360 symbolises all that's wrong with American developers.

But 14 year old boys lap it up like it'll get 'em laid.

Easy to say for the European guys, when the Euro soars high and every console sold converts to $530 or 50.000 Yen. No matter what analysts claim, one console sold in Europe subsidizes the price of three consoles overseas.

Good for Sony - but sadly not very good for European consumers. It definitely makes you think twice before buying a game as well... And it's a tough year as there's plenty of interesting stuff coming out. And well, to generate all this money we need to bust our asses off - which leaves little time to play games in the first place... argh! ;)

Sony are making all the right moves at the moment, the 2009 line up is stunning and the hardware is going from strength to strength.

But we alway knew that Sony would still managed to turn a tidy profit, even if 2008 wasn't their best year :D

Looking forward to an entertaining 2009 :D

"Though Reeves didn’t directly claim that Sony would be enjoying such profit this year"

They're not making any profit from the PS3, let alone a "tidy" one. And what the statements contained in this article are communicating, is that they are cautiously optimistic that the PS3 business will be in the black by the year's end.

Sony should probably form a religion like Scientology based around the Playstation brand. It'd probably be good business with all the "believers" that take even the company line to the most positive extremes.

Maybe MS should start one for the countless 360 fans? The Church of the Latter-Day Gates they could call it.

Probably wouldn't be successful, since most hardcore 360 fans see the Xbox 360 as what it is, a product, and if their video game division didn't deliver in respect to the games, then they wouldn't be buying.

But hey, the minute there's a significant portion of the Xbox fanbase that participates in petitions trying to (feebly) prevent formerly exclusive games from being released on more platforms, or maybe crying out how some sites are "bought" by Sony even when a MS game is that site's overall game of the year, then maybe a MS religion has a shot.

Really my initial comment was a joke, Science Fiction writer Ron L Hubbard stated on a few occasions "The real money is in religion", a few years before he founded the Church of Scientology, so it made sense to reference them in the context of Sony working towards turning a profit on the PS3.

Well either way, it matter's not. there is still a nice shiny PS3 on my shelf awaiting some top titles in 2009 :P
