Apple is to officially announce its successor to the iPad at an event in San Francisco next month, according to reports.
All Things Digital cites “multiple sources” in its report, saying Apple will finally lift the lid on the new iPad on March 2. All eyes will be on San Francisco that week anyway – the Game Developers Conference 2011 runs from February 28 to March 4 at the city’s Moscone Center.
Apple has sold 15 million units of its original tablet since its release last April. 2011 is already being described as the year of the tablet – with many manufacturers releasing their own iPad rivals, most running on Google’s Honeycomb Android operating system – and Sony are reportedly getting in on the act too.
If the reports are true, form suggests Apple will start sending out invites to the event in the next few days. Whether Steve Jobs will be the man on stage following his recent health problems is unknown, though All Things Digital notes Apple’s CEO has resumed his duties to some extent, meeting US president Barack Obama last week.
