One reason that THQ developer Volition won't be bringing Saints Row to Nintendo Wii is because it would cause too much controversy on the motion-centric machine.

Producer Dan Sutton told Edge sister site CVG that he's "sure" a Wii version of Saints Row would cause controversy.

"With games like ours you get much more controversy when you add motion controls like you saw with Manhunt 2," he said.

Last year, Rockstar's Manhunt 2 for Wii stirred up debate due not only to the ultra-violent nature of the game, but the motion controls that had players acting out the violence more dramatically.

"We have weapons like chainsaws, satchel charges, stuff like that," Sutton continued. "I can definitely see people having a problem and outcry towards that because it does actually feel like you're using weapons that way.

"...In Manhunt it feels like you're hacking at somebody, though I suppose that was a bit more over the top than our game was. But yeah, I definitely think you'd get criticism for that in our game, GTA and Crackdown."

Sutton also said that the Wii's lesser graphical capabilities were a reason Saints Row won't be appearing on Nintendo's console.

"At Volition we're really about pushing really good graphics and with the Wii you just feel like you're playing on an older console," he said.

Volition is currently working on Saints Row 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360, the follow up to the original Xbox 360 exclusive game that released in 2006.

Based on the recent advertising for Saints Row which mocked GTA IV i get the feeling that avoiding controversy is not high on their agenda...

Agreed with Pascal. If anything, controversy would be the reason they WOULD bring it to the Wii.

The above is definitely in contention for stupidest statement of the week.

Why on earth would any media producer want to avoid controversy? It's the biggest sales driver ever. Free viral and repeated advertising is another way to call it. Are you so shy, really?

Plus, if everybody started releasing their work only based on how it will be received by sensitive minded pundits, we'd never ever have seen movies like Kubrick's Clockwork Orange or Series like The Sopranos, to name just a couple of violent masterpieces.

At Capcom, it seems there are some brain cells left: Dead Rising coming soon for Wii. We'll see if that's soooo "controversial" that they end up in jail for making it or something.
