The Japanese game industry has recorded a terrible week in sales, with all 6 major consoles declining for the week ending Oct 12.
According to Media Create, sales for the 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, DS and PS2 all fell at an average rate of 15%. The Nintendo DS, which has already sold around 24m units in Japan, has taken the biggest fall with a 24.7% drop, giving it a weekly sales rate of 31,914. Nintendo’s other platform was also against the wall, dropping 9.7% to 22,877.
The PS3, perhaps for being the most expensive console in the context of economic concerns, dropped close to 21% and fell further below the 360 in the charts, which itself sold 7,763 units and held the most consistent sales of all the consoles.
DS Lite: 31,914 (Down 10,471)
PSP: 23,901 (Down 2,144)
Wii: 22,877 (Down 2,453)
360: 7,763 (Down 508)
PS2: 6,982 (Down 1,636)
PS3 5,734 (Down 1,498)
Wow, the Japanese gaming market is doing poorly. As someone stated this time of year is traditionally slow for Japan. But still, the Japenese only accounted for 14.2%, 10%, and 10.9% of combined Japan/US consoles sales (averaging the most recent weekly earnings x5 since the September NPD numbers accounted for 5 weeks of sales, not 4) on the Wii, 360, and PS3 respectively. Even at 30% of the total gaming population of Japan and US combined, if you were to throw Japan 70% more people to make it even, it'd still at that point only account for 22%, 15.9%, and 17.3% of the total combined Japan/US console sales of Wii, 360, and PS3 respectively. Combining all 3 home console sales, Japan only accounts for 19.6% of the console sales when comparing sales when matching up population to console sales ratios. So for every 1 console sold in Japan, 5 are purchased in the US. Ouch. Maybe MS shouldn't be worrying too much about Japan. But I guess 20% is nothing to sneaze at. I'm sure publishers are already aware of this stat since they pay people to figure that out, and maybe that's why Japanese developers are looking at the systems that do well for 3rd parties in a country that sells 80% more hardware. Maybe that's why we are seeing games like FFXIII, Tekken, and those other JRPGs making their way to the 360. The PS3 only has about half the amount of installed base in the US as the 360 does...and going by pure facts presented by the numbers themselves, the US is a far stronger platform for Western and Japanese developers than Japan is (where the PS3 leads the 360). This is ONLY taking the averages from this most recent week, and its quite possible that this was just a bad week for Japan. To REALLY figure out the numbers you'd have to look at a broader time range than 1 week...but still, it gives you an idea of where it'd be.
I'd say the gaming market is doing quite well in Japan. Your analysis, though sound, ignores where all the action is taking place in Japan nowadays - HANDHELDS. Things look a bit gloomy if you only focus on consoles, but the next chart is gonna get a nice shot in the arm with the release of the PSP-3000... and the chart after that is gonna get 10 shots in the arm with the release of the DSi.
This is just the calm before the storm.
Yeah, it was specifically regarding console sales. I was trying to get at why I thought traditionally PS3 only games are coming out on the 360, when, so far in the US, the 360 is the leading SKU 3rd party sales, and the US is a stronger market for consoles so it only makes sense for them to release their games on the 360.
You're def right about the two new handhelds coming out soon. They'll eat that up I'm sure, as will the US.
It would be worth noting that this was also the slowest week last year, Rob.

Nice charts you have there. Couldn't help but notice the Fire Emblem game LTDs on the sidebar, good stuff!
A bad economy will do that. I for one, have not purchased any new games in OVER a month. as a matter of fact, i am replaying some of my favs and since i collect, have brought out some older systems like the saturn and NES and am replaying some classics, I am actually having fun again! I would like to buy the new PSP 3000, but i can wait.
DSi ships next week, no suprise at DS Lite drop off. I can't explain the PS3 though...
Anyone know if Christmas is a big holiday in Japan? If it is, might explain the drop. People aren't buying any for themselves, for fear of gertting it as a christmas gift, and people might nont have started buying them AS gifts yet......just a thought
I wonder how long the 360 selling at a solid rate being a fluke will last?
I wonder how long the PS2 will outsell the PS3, isn't this the second week in a row now?
I believe you're right,
Wii, DS, PSP, 360, PS2 all outselling the PS3? Maybe price really does make a large difference after all?
My personal opinion is that, usually it wouldn't be such a factor but, with the looming "global economic crisis," people are making it more of a factor then it has been in the past. People are looking at the price tag of things a little longer then before.
