Sony Computer Entertainment UK has announced plans to release a selection of 250GB PS3 bundles.
“Following the great success of the new, smaller, 120GB PS3, which sold over 1m units in its first three weeks on sale, the 250GB model has the same hardware specifications as the current model, but with greater storage space, to offer consumers even more choice,” the company said.
250GB PS3 bundles will be available for £284.99. Beginning October 1, “soft bundles” on offer will contain either two PS3 Platinum titles or Infamous. An Uncharted 2: Among Thieves bundle will release on October 16, followed by a Blu-ray movie pack containing Wolverine, The Dark Knight and a Blu-Ray remote on October 19.
Microsoft also recently announced plans to release a number of 250GB Xbox 360 bundles for the first time.
Speaking of PS3 slim bundles, I saw one in Sainsbury this week - PS3 for £219 when you buy a top 20 game. Very tempted.
The largest notebook-sized 2.5" HDD is 750GB. You'll have to wait a few months for 1TB drives to be released, and then they're generally OEMed to computer and external drive manufacturers first. Those profit margins are higher than on bare drives.
What is the point?
They just announced a new SKU that has sold over 1 million in three weeks. Why confuse the customer and retail channel? I REALLY hope this is just one of those soft bundles (just like the 160GB PS3 that was announced last year) that quickly made its way out of retail. Just keep things simple; reduce the RRP quietly to 230 GBP and put true bundles in at 249 GBP. Just keep it simple!
And get GT5 out now!
This has to be the most pointless SKU in the marketplace at the moment.
Just install your own 1TB drive, They're pretty dam cheap these days
Thats what I plan to do once I get a PS3, plus you can sell the old drive on eBay to offset some of the cost. Best thing about that is that changing the PS3 HDD doesn't invalidate the warranty. I bet 360 owners wished chaning the HDD was as simple.
the 360 HDD is ridiculous. I still have the 20GB one with a little over 1 GB of free space left. Keep having to delete demos, videos etc to make room for more. I stubbornly refuse to pay jacked up prices for a larger one!
If you are happy to lose all the data you have on your 20GB HHD, have a look at this: http://www.pcworld.com/article/150970/upgrade_your_xbox_360s_hard_drive_...
You can replace your existing hard-drive and back up stuff first using software on your PC by unscrewing the mounted drive system on your 360. You just need a couple of allan keys a t2 and a t7 if I remember correctly, did it for my little bro, worked a charm. Just need to be careful because there are some springs and stuff inside you need to keep track of, but it's just a 2.5" inch drive inside same as any laptop. The 360 firmware will probably limit you to 250gb as that's currently the largest official size.
But doesn't that invalidate the 360 warranty?
I'd imagine it does. Plus I'm so cack-handed I'd 'invalidate' the 360 itself in the process...
The only thing stopping consumers at the moment is an easily-copied security sector and a firmware replacement; the drives themselves are standard notebook drives.
Microsoft should just bite the bullet and sell HDD cases, drop the security secitor, and allow consumers to upgrade their HDDs as they see fit. I'd imagine that they'd see a marked increase in XBLM sales overnight once people actually had more room to download content to.
That'll never happen...
