Sega Mulls Core Gamer Opportunity on Wii

As the PS3 and 360 push for family-friendly titles, Sega considers ìreverse opportunityî for Nintendoís console.

Sega believes that the Wii’s extensive catalogue of casual games provides an opportunity for publishers to deliver commercially successful core-gamer titles.

“There have been some good hardcore Wii titles. Resident Evil 4 has done reasonable numbers; Red Steel has also performed really well,” said Sega Europe North’s managing Director Alan Pritchard, speaking to MCV.

Pritchard adds, however, that many publishers have tended to focus on mass-market family titles, “so perhaps there hasn’t been the array or depth of hardcore titles on Wii.”

Sega’s sales director John Clark concurs, observing that “more family friendly titles are being released on PlayStation and 360 as this is a growth area for these formats. Maybe with Wii there’s a reverse opportunity.”

The opinions of both executives come ahead of Sega’s push for core-gamer content on the Wii; with the publisher set to release MadWorld, House of the Dead, and The Conduit for the Wii over the next few months.
