Thanks to a strong software lineup led by Metal Gear Solid 4, Tokyo-based Konami has posted strong sales and profit figures for the first quarter ended June 30.
MGS4, released on June 12, drove quarterly revenues of 70.8 billion yen ($654.3 million), up 16.7 percent from Q1 2007's 60.7 billion yen, the company said Tuesday.
Operating income was 11.6 billion yen for the quarter, up 65.6 percent.
The PlayStation 3-exclusive MGS4 had a worldwide simultaneous release during the quarter, shipping over 3 million units day one.
Konami called sales of the game "sensational."
Q1 net income was 5.7 billion yen, up from 3.9 billion yen from a year ago.
Aside from MGS4, Konami said that baseball games performed well in Japan, while in North America, Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party and Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore "sold well."
In Europe, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 was a top performer.
Arcade games including Horseriders, Action Deka and Mah-Jong Fight Club 6 performed well.
For the full fiscal year, Konami expects net revenue of 330 billion yen, operating income of 45 billion yen and net income of 26 billion yen.
The thing that Konami really shows here is how dependent they are on the MGS series. Where would they be without it? Probably in the same boat as Midway, honestly.

MGS4 was insane, I just finished it a few nights ago. Just a stunning game in every way imaginable. Everything was just so beautiful and polished. Aside from one or two really really long cut scenes, it was perfect.
No kidding, I just finished it last night. It's joined the ranks of those very few games that actually managed to bring tears to my eyes.
"shipping over 3 million units day one"
Really? Didn't know that.
@Digital-Hero: please let it be a real Boktai game for the DS. Or a PS3 one :P
It's nice to see that Konami is pleased with the sales of MGS4. I'm praying that Kojima is hard at work cooking up another "triple A" title. :)
