Sky Player, Sky’s online TV service, will be introduced to Xbox Live in late October, Microsoft has confirmed.

“October 27 - that's the date when you'll be able to watch TV from Sky on your Xbox 360,” said Graeme Boyd, Microsoft Europe's Xbox community manager.

Announced in May, the service will allow Xbox 360 owners to access a range of channels and programmes to view live or on-demand. Content will initially be offered in standard definition only, and won’t be recordable.

While Boyd said that the "channel line-up and pricing [are] to come at launch”, users can expect to be able to access movies and entertainment shows, as well as documentaries and programming dedicated to kids, music, the arts and sport, including Premier League football and Test Match cricket.

Guess all this serves as is more exposure for the Murdoch empire.

Standard Definition just isn't going to cut it..

If only you could choose to opt out...

Isn't it? Sky has 9.3 million subscribers. Of those, only 1 million have Sky HD.

Over 50% of homes lack a HDTV.

If we're arguing semantics here. You highlight Sky users very well, but this isn't about Sky users is it? I guess if your one of the 9.3 million subscribers to Sky then you'll probably swallow any old shit they'll feed you.

None off us mind giving money to Microsoft to pay for what is a very good Live service, but we never signed up for a proportion of our subscription fees to be syphoned of and lining the pockets of people like Rupert Murdoch, Warmongering little fascist! If you happen to be someone who doesn't mind where their money is going then all I say to you is good luck with that and to each his own.

This service is going to be on a next gen console with high definition capabilities. Just seems a little half arsed not to include High Definition feeds, considering the amount for HD content that is already on Xbox Live. You'd think they'd want to give users a choice. I'd even go so far as to pay that little bit extra for on-demand HD stream if the product was worthy of the cash... sorry points

The point about highlighting Sky users is that Sky is pretty much the only provider to give a wealth of high definition programmes, so if anyone is going to have a HD service, it really should be Sky customers. But the take up simply isn't anywhere near a majority. In fact, it's very much in the minority.

Yes, the 360 has high definition capabilities. But a huge number of it's audience don't use it. In September, Microsoft dropped it's insistence that games be produced in HD. Possibly because half the people who played Gears of War 2 did so on an SD TV? The PS3 heralded Blu Ray as the second coming. But it doesn't include a HD cable in the box. Why? Because a huge number of people would never use it.

If you don't like Rupert Murdoch, don't pay for Sky Player, simple really. Your live subscription will not go towards him.

I stand corrected.

Why would anyone pay to watch a jerky and intermittant feed from Sky in SD through their Xbox, when you can just pay Sky a similar amount for a proper box with a decent picture (in HD if you desire). This is a pointless gimmick, I bet most 360 owners would just rather see the BBC iPlayer on there.

nolim's picture

Yep, iPlayer would be much better, how about 4OD as well, at least not every other console this generation has that, once again M$ screws it's customers with another cash wringing so called service. I'm not just 360 bashing, it's still the console with the best games, but i sometimes think M$ really don't have a clue what they're doing.

Owwwwwwwwww the cough cough iPlayer lol tried to watch a re-run of an F1 race with it..........fuck that shit it was like a piss poor quality vid off youtube.

Alex Walker's picture

Really? I've watched plenty of shows on iPlayer. The integration with the PS3 was tested with Mock the Week, and I noticed no difference to when I watch the BBC.

brothergrim's picture

Try watching any sport on it..........fucking vcd mk2 lol

Duncan_Stewart's picture

Try watching the Champions League on the Sky Player, absolute waste of time. Unless you like seeing the word "buffering" a hell of a lot. Never done sport on the iPlayer so cannot comment, but I have it on cable and it works really well with other shows.

Ben_Lathwell's picture

Ah well but you are ignoring the xbox owning people whom live in houses made of felt not strong enough to support a satellite dish, a very mis-understood and oft ignored market

Duncan_Stewart's picture

They can get cable like I had to then!

Alex Walker's picture

Initially offered in Standard definition, meaning there are plans to expand it later on. And since it's pricing has yet to be announced, we have no idea is it's paying a similar fee or not, thats pure speculation.

Ben_Lathwell's picture

Its Sky, BskyB will never ever give anything away cheaper than they have to

Alex Walker's picture

Yes, but thats the point, cheaper than they have to. The quality is not on a par with Sky proper, so the fee it attracts won't be the same.

Add in that there is a pay per view option, and it's looks potentially much cheaper.

Duncan_Stewart's picture

If its priced like Sky Player on PC (which it pretty much will be) people with a Sky subscription and Sky Mulitroom or Broadband will pretty much be able to access everything with no extra costs - absolutley pointless though as if you already have Sky presumably on the same telly the Xbox is on, why would you want a box with a worse picture quality also connected to it?
If you only have a sky TV subscription or don't have one at all to take advantage of the Sky Player on 360 will cost you £15/month to access entertainment, £34 for entertainment + Sky Sports, £32 for entertainment + Sky Movies and £41 for all services, pretty much in line with Sky TV, but with far fewer channels and at poorer quality if my experiences with Sky Player on PC are anything to go by. Unless you already have Sky plus one of its other extra cost services it just isn't worth it.

Wow, that went down like a fart at the Ritz.
