Sony has announced that the PS3‭ ‬has amassed global sales above‭ ‬21‭ ‬million.‭

As part of the Sony's announcement regarding its bid to launch hardware across‭ ‬Latin America,‭ ‬the firm claimed that life-to-date sales of the PS3‭ ‬were now at‭ ‬21.3‭ ‬million.

The company also stated that‭ ‬the‭ ‬PlayStation Network has amassed‭ ‬17‭ ‬million registered accounts,‭ ‬though this was given as a whole number and not specifying if it included duplicate accounts and/or‭ ‬excluded PSP accounts and accounts activated on the‭ ‬PSN website.

Last week, Sony announced that total worldwide sell-in units of the PSP had surpassed the 50 million mark.

Units shipped is units sold. Sony doesnt send the systems to retailers in good faith. The retailers buy the systems from Sony. So yes, I believe this stat

What's this? Suddenly a deluge of positive Sony news in EDGE's pages. Truth or not. I'm glad EDGE is starting to wise up. They were starting to look like Xbox's official website for a while. Now only if they do the same to their reviews section.

But that article discrediting Metacritic for their game reviews scoring (maybe because EDGE was only 1 among 2 reviewers who gave KZ2 a low score) was, let's face it, so wroong timing.

Alex Walker's picture

You did read the blog where I showed there was negligible difference between the review scores right?

Also, the Metacritic article was in the same issue as the Killzone review, so will have been started and possibly finished before Killzone recieved a score. I'd hardly say that it discredited Metacritic either.

Anonymous's picture

How can an article with "Why Metacritic Doesn't Matter" as a headline NOT discredit Metacritic. The overall gist of the article was that Metacritic is not an accurate tool for determining whether a game is good or not. Saying that is like saying Metacritic is not effiicient in its purpose --Which is to evaluate products of the entertainment industry.

Also I didn't say EDGE released this article in response to the KZ2 score discrepancies. I was just saying the timing of the article was wrong.

Alex Walker's picture

If you aren't referring to Killzone, then why is it bad timing?

The article was in reference to game development, it's impact on developers, and ultimately sales. The conclusion was that the top selling games are not the top scored games.

The article exists because publishers are increasingly using Metacritic scores as a guide for anything from developer bonuses for the completed product to determining the budget of the game in the first place.

A Metacritic average is less than the sum of its parts. I myself don't look at the average and instead, focus on the individual reviews that make up the total average score. If a game gets a good score from at least majority of all the reviewers (official review mags, not included) then I'm satisfied that the game is good.

About good scores translating to sales, some games (like Wii-fit or big sequels) are just review-proof or you might-say "metacritic-proof" and will get enormous sales just through sheer popularity or marketing

Only 7 million behind Msoft, at its far more expensive price point and releasing a whole year later? That's very good. Drop the price and they'll close the gap pretty quickly.

The 360 has a roughly 8.5 mill lead in North America alone. The rest of the world is much tighter. I never underestimate the yanks ability to 'Buy American'. Sony lost the North American market to a cheaper, earlier released console, that simple. For Sony's sake and the future viability of the Playstation brand I hope the South American expansion works out well. I DO NOT want a Microsoft monopoly on the high grade console market. No one should.

I had 3 PSN accounts (UK/US/JPN). On 360 i had 4 when i owned the system.

It's all PR BS on all sides, but MS does at least make the distinction between Gold (paid) and Silver members/accounts.

I'm sure Sony has the metrics/stats for how many of those accounts have been used on PS3s, but have chosen not to make that breakdown public.

ArronC07's picture

Microsoft make absolutely no distinction what so ever. One thing we do know is that 100% of the accounts created on the PS3 for PSN is capable of full online play, we have no idea what the equivalent percentage for accounts created on XBOX Live is.

grognard66's picture

MS doesn't give a precise breakdown between Gold and Silver, but has stated repeatedly that well over half are paid subscribers - so at least $400 million in Live subscription revenues last year.

ArronC07's picture

What's well over half? 51% 98% 67%?

That's the problem with MS they're very good at not saying an awful lot, I know for sure that every account registered on PS3 is capable of playing online, I can't say for sure how many XBOX Live accounts can do the same.

grognard66's picture

Actually ArronC07, MS is much better at reporting these numbers (and independent financial types like Michael Pachter state based on their evaluation of MS' financials that there are 13-14 million Gold members). Sony's number of 17 million is even more meaningless since it includes both PSP and PS3 and you don't even have to own a Sony product to create an account online. I personally have 3 PSN accounts (US, Europe, Japan). So no, every account registered is not capable of playing online. If Sony gave the actual number of PS3 users with accounts that would be helpful, but they adamantly refuse to do so (Pachter estimates this at under 2 million in the US).

"MS does at least make the distinction between Gold (paid) and Silver members/accounts. "

They do? I have never seen such a breakdown, would you care to give a link to such data?

chryslerbites's picture

First of all...get it right Sony said "PlayStation Network has amassed‭ ‬17‭ ‬million registered ACCOUNTS,‭" not "USERS". There is a very distinct difference. One user can have many accounts. Please understand the English language be fore you make a comment. Second 21 million is "actual units sold to consumers" not "shipped to retail" like Microsoft reports. So in fact Microsoft has always inflated their numbers. There is almost 7 Billion people in the world which make 21 million an insignificant number.
So 21 Million is very easy to believe. Also in this economy it would be stupid to lie about sales the repercussions would be to great. So keep your conspiracy theories to minimum.

TechRyze's picture

I have 2 accounts just for my PSP. This is nonsense.

Anonymous's picture

These sales numbers are 100% bogus nonsense to stupid shareholders dumb enough to believe what they are being told.

Remember, Sony was telling shareholders that they were only 500,000 systems behind their 6 million sales goal, when in reality the PS3 had only sold 1.4 million systems. This is a subject I've read about a lot here and other websites and magazines.

And Sony's talk of 17 million PSN users is also very deceptive. At the time Sony made that announcement, there were actually fewer people announced on Xbox Live, which would mean that Sony was trying to claim there were more PSN users than Xbox Live users, even though Xbox 360 has completely dominated the Playstation 3 in terms of worldwide sales, especially in North America where Xbox 360 has an 8 million system sales lead.

The Sony employee named Kaz Hirai who made that announcement was called Krazy Kaz after making these types of announcements for a reason...because they are crazy!

Yes & that is probably no different at M$ or Nintendo. If true.

Alex Walker's picture

It might be deceptive, but it is accurate. It includes multiple accounts on one console, and PSP signups.

Congrats!

If this is for worldwide sales and the numbers are accurate then this is really good news for Sony! Good to see despite everything there is a great deal of confidence in the Sony package.

So we step into Year 3, PS2 finally being dropped!! Developers getting a real grip on the hardware. Things can only get better for PS3 from here on in! So much to look forward too.... God of War 3, Darksiders, Heavy Rain, Infamous and Final Fantasy to name a few :D

Weird, I had assumed PS3 had already launched in Latin America by now.

JayLee's picture

Numbers are old news they announced these with the earnings release at the end of January.

KingSlender's picture

Sales numbers are insignificant at this point. Sony is probably going to remain in third place numbers wise, but as a PS3 owner all I care about are the games. There have been no third party games cancelled that I can recall and as long as the games keep coming, we as owners have nothing to worry about.

grognard66's picture

I don't know about cancellations, but smaller publishers are already avoiding PS3 development given PS3's position in NA. Just this week, Race Pro and Stoked came out exclusively for 360 in the US. Granted, most people aren't terribly excited about either title, but it is a troubling sign for smaller niche titles in this territory if you only own a PS3.

These figures certainly sound very impressive, but do they exceed their original forecasts?

Kenology's picture

Sony lowballed their forcasts to begin with after they fell short of them twice before.

tirminyl's picture

I am not sure if it exceeds their forecasts but they have been met. I would need to do some searching for their numbers to show if they have or not.
