Sony: 250 PS2 "Greatest Hits"

A low-cost console and abundant inexpensive software means that PS2 is still Sony's biggest mass market play.

As part of Sony’s PS2 price reduction announcement, the firm said that over 250 PS2 games have achieved “Greatest Hits” status to date.

To qualify as a Greatest Hit, PS2 games must have sold more than 400K copies at retail and been on the market for at least nine months. Greatest Hits games are also value-priced.

Cheap software helps make PS2 Sony’s main offering for the mass market. The console on Tuesday dropped from $129.99 to $99.99—much more financially accessible than the currently core-focused $399.99 80GB PS3.

Nearly 10 years after the console’s launch, Sony will continue to support the machine with first-party software this year, including MLB 09: The Show and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge.

PS2’s library will break 1,900 titles this year, Sony said.
