Sony CEO Howard Stringer has brushed off Activision’s threat to stop supporting PlayStation consoles unless the platform holder adjusts its hardware pricing strategy.
“They have to cut the [PS3's] price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in June. “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.”
Speaking at the Allen & Co conference in Idaho on Tuesday, Stringer responded by saying that it would be illogical to cut the price of PS3 at the present time, reports Reuters.
“I (would) lose money on every PlayStation I make -- how's that for logic," he said. "He likes to make a lot of noise," Stringer added of Kotick. "He's putting pressure on me and I'm putting pressure on him. That's the nature of business."
Numerous analysts have predicted that a PS3 price cut announcement will be made in the coming months. Sterne Agee’s Arvind Bhatia said recently that “industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden,” while Lazard’s Colin Sebastian noted that Sony’s PS3 sales outlook “supports expectations for a PS3 price reduction this year, likely at some point between the E3 industry conference in June and the end of the summer.”
I just figured out what Stringer needs to do.
The perfect "f**k-all" to Activision will be to release the PS3-Slim at $299, bundled with motion orbs; and then stage a huge press conference stating that he has been listening closely to Activision's requests. After which, he'll demo Guitar Hero using only the orb-controllers.
He'll go on to show how he's managed to accommodate the publisher's request both, by reducing the price of actual system AND by eliminating the need for Activision to bundle those "pricey" accessories.
They'll get a good dose of "You asked for it." Something they completely deserve.
corporate posturing.
mind you, doesn't sound like the Sony price cut is coming.
If nothing else, we now know that Sony still isn't making much of a profit (if any) on the existing PS3 considering Stringer's comment that they would lose money with any price drop right now. A PS3 Slim should help improve profitability, but I think a $50 price drop is far more realistic than the $100 drop everyone is talking about.
I love the quote in the title, but that's about it.
Is he stroking an invisible dog?
Or has someone off screen thrown him a ball?
No way. The guy is TOTALLY a Jedi, waving his hand and controlling someone's mind off camera
"These aren't the price cuts you're looking for. You can go about your business. Move along."
