The newly announced God Of War: Ascension will be the first game in the series to sport a multiplayer mode, Sony has confirmed.
In a press release, Sony reveals that multiplayer battles will support up to eight players, with customisable avatars, armour and weapons. Further customisation options will be unlocked once players align with one of four Greek gods: Zeus, Ares, Poseidon or Hades.
Todd Papy, game director at Sony Santa Monica, said: "The bar is set quite high for this franchise, as each God Of War title succeeds in being better than the last. Combined with refined gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals and a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new online multiplayer mode, I guarantee that God Of War: Ascension will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more."
Ascension, which Sony says will feature a revamped combat system, was hurriedly announced earlier this month after a premature leak by online retailer Amazon. It's a prequel to the other games in the series, telling protagonist Kratos' origin story in what Sony says is the "most ambitious" game in the series so far.
