Sony considering Vita control for PS3

The Japanese company admits being intrigued by Nintendo's Wii U concept.

SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has revealed that Sony is carrying out "experiments" to look into using its newly named Vita handheld as a controller for PS3.

"It is very interesting the ways that Nintendo went with Wii U, and I was surprised it wasn't exactly as it had been rumoured," he told Develop. "Already people are starting to ask about linking Vita and PS3 to do something similar, in terms of using two screens, and having controls on the screen."

Nintendo unveiled its Wii U touchscreen controller yesterday during its E3 conference.

"Lots of the things that developers of Vita games are doing, as you may have seen, is experimenting with connectivities between Vita and PS3," Yoshida continues.

"The Wipeout [2048] team came up with their cross play ideas, and the other Vita teams have come up with ways of playing with two systems. It's just a matter of time, as we provide the SDKs to developers so they can make use of both PS3 and Vita, and they might come up with something interesting."

While $249 would make it an exceptionally expensive controller, Sony's huge PS3 installed userbase means the total outlay required for such a setup is unlikely to include the console itself for most players, and it's functionality as a standalone console offers greater potential than Nintendo's housebound tablet.

It's like they're not even trying to hide the fact that they're a bunch of copying scumbags.

Good artists copy, great artists steal.

Respected artists do neither.

This stupid analogy aside, I think praising the fact that sony steals all it's ideas from competitors and never innovates is pretty dumb.

I'd say the original Playstation was one of the most innovative consoles ever, mainly due to a lineup of titles that successfully introduced a completely new, older audience to gaming. The same audience that Microsoft then followed with the Xbox and Nintendo are trying to snare alongside the casuals with Wii U.
They may simply have dined out on this achievement for 15 years and now be more known for their Prince Philip-style gaffs than success, but I'd argue that their transformation of the entire industry from a kid's pastime into a socially acceptable hobby and part of mainstream culture, was incredibly innovative. I appreciate you don't like the company but sometimes this relentless hatred goes a bit overboard.

I totally agree that the ps1 was one of the best consoles ever made, sony did everything right. Since then though they have come to treat both customers and developers with utter contempt.

I would love to see Sony come up with its own ideas once in a while.

Whats so original about the Nintendo idea????
They've just copied Ipad and streaming(which Sony are already doing with remote play). Apple are already doing it in ios5.
Why is it when Nintendo comes up with something that its regarded as original and brilliant????
They've been putting the same stuff out for years. When was the last time you seen a great original Nintendo IP?Always the same Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party etc
