Sony Ericsson has revealed its plans for the UK launch of the “PlayStation Phone”, Xperia Play, which is set for release at the end of this month.
The handset will launch on March 31, the firm has confirmed, with six games pre-installed: Tetris, Crash Bandicoot, FIFA 10, The Sims 3, Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors and Star Battalion.
A further 50 games – a mix of PlayStation classics, optimised smartphone ports and original content – will be available through PlayStation Suite.
Sony is backing the launch with its biggest-ever UK marketing campaign, and says all mobile operators and retailers are carrying the device. The firm has also hinted that Xperia Play could be sold through other channels, like videogame retailers.
“We are currently still in commercial conversation, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Xperia Play appear in other channels,” Sony Ericsson marketing director David Hilton told MCV.
“All the mobile operators and retailers are selling it. It is rare these days to get a product that is sold everywhere, but this is one of those. This will be the biggest marketing campaign we have had in the UK.”
