Sony Computer Entertainment has further outlined the PS3 motion control sensing technology it first unveiled at E3.
The PlayStation Eye-powered tech has been designed to work "with any games across all genres from casual to core" and will arrive in spring 2010 with a "range of first-party and third-party content," according to SCE documents obtained by Kotaku.
The motion sensing controller will support force feedback rumble, and the PlayStation Eye will be able to track up to four of the new controllers at any one time.
Sony is also “looking into the possibility" of combining motion control accessory and regular PS3 controller functions, according to the report.
MarkJFerreri; I agree with absolutely everything you said. Except, I bought a PS2 from the outset.. and was pissed at how long I had to wait for the games they said would be available from the get-go. Over a year later, Gran Turismo finally came out; but was nowhere near what they were promising. Waiting patiently release after release; I quickly came to realize that Sony was nowhere near getting the right games out, at the right time and with the quality I expected. PS2 moved onto the spare TV to make room for my new XBox.
Partly because of my large hands; but mostly because of the style of games, I moved past what Sony was promising and grew very happy with what MS was delivering. Ultimately I ended up only owning about 5 PS2 games; but owned well over 30 XBox games. I'm catching up on a few gold nuggets I missed by playing God of War on my PS3; but Sony really never hit the sweet spot for me. For me, they tend to make exciting announcements way too early; causing them to get stuck to an unrealistic deadline to deliver it, which causes them to release late and underimpress.
Overall, I am most excited about Sony's ideas for motion control. I find myself wishing I could use it on my 360 with the Natal system though; then I would get the best of both worlds.
Anyone want to take a guess at whether or not we'll see seperate downloads/updates for this motion device? How much time do you think it will take to get this thing working on the PS3 from the moment you walk in your door? I say it will be at least 30 minutes.. 15 or so to download all of the updates and another 15 to install them. :)
Okay, guys
For those who remember me, I'm a staunch 360 'fanboy', but have to side with the PS3 here, a little. Jack, a corporation the size of Sony has probably tossed together several programs for the PS3's motion controller already. They are (in my opinion) being used with system testers to refine a system that was still in development They probably chose not to embarrass themselves with a poor showing of software (designed for testing purposes). They are also most likely gathering big glob software corporations like Ubisoft and EA and encouraging them to get involved. These folks also had nothing yet to share.
Indrema, I have a Dreamcast and not a Playstation. I was disappointed by the Sony hype. I did buy the PS2, and again, was dissappointed by the Sony lies and hype. I have yet to buy a PS3, because of all the hype-lies that were promises and not delivered by the time the system was released, and more that followed afterward. The system was dumbed down ((and continues to be) But as far as marketing goes, Sony's beginning to learn a lesson here. And if their console actually did all the things that were promised at the pre-release E3, I'd have been first in line to buy one, yes, at theirr initial release price. But they lied.
I don't think that in this motion control issue, that they are trying to lead us away from the Wii or 360, as much as just saying "Look, we can do that too!" I say Cudoos for the effort. One of my gripes of Sony's line is the controller. I hate the Sony controller that has cramped my larger fingers since the very first non-joystick configuration. I think the motion control format might sweeten the system enough to help me choose a PS3 in the next 18 months.
Grognard66, true about the RAM in the PS3, and their graphics is weaker in certain areas, but their rational was becaause they recognized the hight speed processing potential of their multicore CPU, and it has prooved to be able to process more on-screen objects then my vaunted Xbox 360. Maybe, by the time they retire their currrent system, all companies will have mastered the tricks to take advantage of the PS3's strengths.
Mark 4RE . . . . .
Disappointed by the PS2? I was a GameCube guy last gen, and only got my PS2 in '07, so I can say this without bias -- how could you be disappointed with the PS2? It's probably the best system ever.
I just feel like I should hear more - "PSP GO can do these things you didn't know about, PS3 has streaming video now, NXE makes you invisible.....whatever."
All I hear about now from Microsoft & Sony is Motion...Motion....& more Motion
I get it. You guys were late, & could just stop reading these posts - but I won't. I'll just bitch. At least I'm not the only one. I feel like everyone's trying to tell me why not to buy something else; instead of why to buy their product.
How can there be core games for spring '10? Wouldn't they have been announced already?
So I guess we can call 2009 - The War of the White Papers
So Sony and Microsoft enter the motion battle arena with press releases, promises, a half-truths. I can't wait to relive 1999 again, when I was playing Dreamcast & people told me how stupid I was because the PS2 was going to be so much better.
I eventually owned all three 128-bit systems..err 4, but I can't help but think of my friends who hung on every vapid announcement; while great games just passed them by.
I little more "on-topic". Sony is warning developers that using motion tech causes SPU & Ram Overhead, detailing ways to minimize this. How are we reaching the PS3 ceiling already? Isn't this thing supposed to be, like, practically sentient?
PS3 suffered from RAM overhead problems the day it was released. Sony has tried to reduce the mandatory set-aside (for system level stuff) but doesn't have the software chops MS does - which is why they still can't support cross-game voicechat despite the fact their set-aside remains over twice that of 360 yet still accomplishes less.
