Sony hoping for Vita Flash support

Sony has said that it is in negotiations with Adobe in an attempt to ensure the PlayStation Vita supports Flash.

Last month Adobe revealed that it was to cease development of mobile Flash, after apparently giving up in its attempt to create a stable version of its technology for portable devices.

In an interview with Impress Watch, translated by Andriasang, Sony's division two software development head Muneki Shimada said only that the company was continuing negotiations with Adobe and "had not given up."

Elsewhere in the interview, Shimada and SCE senior VP Yoshio Matsumoto shared information on Vita's other multimedia capabilities. The system can play back video up to 720p, and while Shimada said 1080p support could be enabled in a future firmware update there would be little point because of Vita's 544 pixel vertical resolution; even 720p video will be downscaled.

Shimada said that the reason Sony had chosen to use a proprietary - and expensive - memory solution, rather than a generic format like SD cards, was "to make sure they could have something with an equal condition for everyone," and also for security.

Vita will be released in Japan on December 17, and in North America, Europe and Australia on February 22.
