Sony to invest $20 million in PSN exclusives

Papa & Yo, Eufloria and Okabu the first to benefit from Sony's renewed commitment to its Pub Fund.

Sony has announced that it is to invest $20 million in PlayStation Network exclusives over the next three years.

The investment, revealed this afternoon on the PlayStation Blog, will be shared among internal Sony studios as well as independents as part of Sony's Pub Fund initiative.

Announced at GDC in 2009, the Pub Fund sees Sony match the cost of an independent project in return for its exclusivity to PSN. The first game released as a result of the initiative was Doublesix's Burn Zombie Burn, which sold over 70,000 units in the first four months following its release. Hello Games' Joe Danger also benefited from Pub Fund backing.

Sony has so far confirmed three games in which it is to invest: Okabu, a cooperative adventure from Rolando developer Handcircus; former IGF finalist Eufloria, originally known as Dyson and described by developer Omni Systems as an ambient RTS; and Minority's Papa & Yo, a thirdperson puzzler that turned heads following its announcement at E3.

"We continually strive to make PlayStation Network the most innovative console game and entertainment service," PSN director of marketing Brandon Stander writes on the PlayStation Blog. "Under this investment, we're committed to delivering titles that have innovative gameplay mechanics, vibrant visuals, interesting storylines and an artistic element to interactive entertainment that can only be found on PSN."

While Okabu and Papa And Yo will only be released on PSN, Eufloria is already available for PC through Steam, and is also set for release on Mac and iOS. Sony says it will announce more games which are to benefit from its investment in due course.
