Sony to launch 3D PlayStation monitor

Displays individual fullscreen images for each player; no more splitscreen.

Speaking at Sony's E3 conference today, Sony boss Jack Tretton revealed that the company will be launching a PlayStation branded 24" 3D display to lower the cost of 3D gaming.

The monitor requires glasses to view, but is capable of displaying two seperate fullscreen images for each player.

Sony will be releasing a $499 bundle which will include the 24" 3D monitor, a pair of glasses, Resistance 3 and an HDMI lead.

The glasses will retail for $69.99 if bought seperately.

Tretton began the presentation by apologising to PSN users affected by the recent outage.

This a good value compared to how expensive most 3D TV moniters are, there around a £1000 each at the moment.

If you shop around, you can get a 46" Samsung 750 series for under £700 with three sets of glasses thrown in.

I'd only be interested if it was at least 40" and had a freeview tuner.

I'm all for killing two birds with one stone.

This TV is not meant for the high end of the market, it's meant to be a cheap and cheerful entry point into 3D gaming. My mate's younger brother wants to get one for his bedroom. There is a market for it.

Resistance 3 means two players can play co-op each with a fullscreen image! Quite amazing if there is no performance hit on the gameplay. Now if more games could support this, and if the Xbox 360 can also use it, then it is a very clever product.
