Sony offers warranty extension service to new owners of PS3 and PSP hardware

Sony has launched a new PlayStation Protection Plan service, allowing PSP and PS3 owners to pay for extended warranthy coverage for their consoles.

Extensions of either one or two years are offered for both consoles, and for the PSP Sony's offering an additional accidental damage plan that covers things like users dropping their handhelds.

The service, however, is only available to PSP-3000s (the second slim model) and PSPgo units, and those who's console (PS3 or PSP) is still covered under the standard one-year warranty.

Here's how the cost breaks down:

- PS3 - 1-year extension ($49.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
- PSP - 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
- PSP with Accidental Damage - 1-year extension ($39.99) or 2-year extension ($49.99)

As Sony explains, "the pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians using official parts at SCEA-authorised repair facilities."
