Sony: No PlayStation 4 discussion “for quite some time”

Wii U announcement won’t accelerate Sony’s plans for a new home console as PS3 is “just hitting its stride”.

Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton has said it’s far too early to begin having discussions about a PS3 successor.

The executive told Forbes: “PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have.

“What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period.

“But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.”

Tretton also said Nintendo’s Wii U announcement at E3 will have little impact on Sony’s own home console strategy.

“I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.’

“Our attitude is kind of ‘welcome to the party.’ If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us.”

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios told Edge this week it is "pretty sure" that at least one new console from Sony or Microsoft will be on shelves in 2014.

Sony today announced a PS3 hardware revision that is lighter and uses less power - and may, reports suggest, boast improved anti-piracy measures.

Incompetent and arrogant, quite a combination this guy has. If sony come late to the party again they will be crushed in the next-gen. The brand has been massively tarnished already and customers will move away in droves if sony don't start showing them some respect.

I wouldn't be rushing ahead either to get out the next box when there is such a large install base on this one and both hardware as well as software sales are strong. Same for Xbox.
But, the next gen systems will take at least as long as current gen games to program for (and logically, probably longer), so if they want some desirable, fully featured, full length, HD games out for launch, they would have to start on them pretty soon (if they haven't started already). Otherwise it will be another disappointing Wii U style reveal.
Also if Nintendo's Wii U has a horrible launch line up (as is looking likely) or they don't fix the multiplayer capabilities, a strong console reveal by Sony or Microsoft next year would likely seal the Wii U's fate as this generations Dreamcast.
