SCEA president Jack Tretton has said that the PS3 is "well on its way" to reaching the company’s annual sales target of ten million units, according to Reuters.

Additionally, Tretton said that the firm’s PSP is on course to hit its 15 million unit sales goal this business year.

The company’s PlayStation division suffered an annual loss of 124.5 billion yen last fiscal year, having sold 9.24 million PS3s and 13.89 million PSPs.

However, Sony expects its gaming unit to report an operating profit for the year ending March 2009.

Sony made a range of announcements at its E3 press conference on Tuesday, including the phasing out of the 40GB PS3 and plans to launch its videogame operations in South America this year. You can check out the full conference recap here.

I like how you conveniently forgot to mention in your rant towards Sony's false sales figures that m$ also falsifies their sales by including replacement consoles to those who suffered the RROD. And considering m$ themselves have admitted that at least one third of the first 10 million units sold will experience this breakdown, that's a pretty good amount of padding.

The problem is that Sony is not well on its way to hitting its goal for the number of people who "own" the Playstation 3.

Remember this example from the past:

Jack Tretton said Sony's "Sales Goal" was to reach 6 Million systems by the spring of 2007. Tretton was being interviewed and criticized because of the "poor sales" (e.g., lack of owners) of the Playstation 3. But Tretton kept making excuses, saying "We are only 500,000 units short of our sales goal." Tretton said that because Sony had produced 5,500,000 Playstation 3 units. While this interview was taking place, there was a chart on the screen clearly showing that the Playstation 3 had only 1.4 Million "owners."

Obviously, there was a big problem with communication between the actual "sales" figures, and the number of actual "owners" of the Playstation 3.

I did some research and found out what the problem is. Sony considers a PS3 "sold" the instant it comes off the production line and is transferred to their Inventory. Even though a wholesaler or retailer has not yet purchased the system, Sony still considers the system sold as long as it is in their inventory.

Nintendo and Microsoft consider something "sold," only when a wholesaler or retailer has purchased the system. Considering that the Xbox 360 and Wii completely sell out at all stores during the holidays, these "shipped" numbers are an excellent representation of the number of Xbox 360 and Wii systems that have been sold.

Industry insiders and reliable analysts often refer to Sony as "Fony" because of Sony's false sales information. For example, there are websites that try to gather sales information, but the information is automatically poisoned with false information because those websites are making using of "sales" information provided by Sony. The information from Sony that would actually provide reliable information would be the number of consumers who "own" the Playstation 3. Unfortunately, Sony does not reveal that information, because the number of people who "own" the Playstation 3 is far lower than the number of PS3 systems that have been "sold" according to Sony's poor definition of the word "sold."
