Following the news on Sunday that the PS3 had celebrated its second birthday since launch, the system’s hardware marketing boss John Koller has posted a speech of sorts on the Playstation blog by going through every success the console has made in those two years.
Koller listed every major accomplishment, the most alarming being that there are 14 million ‘active’ PSN accounts set up on PS3 and 273 million pieces of content have been downloaded; “we know that you’re thirsting for this digital entertainment,” Koller said.
The figure itself, despite the ambiguous definition of ‘active’, would mean that around 80% of PS3 owners have activated a PSN account.

Most people on here seem to have both consoles. I've only got PS3. Worth shelling out for a 360? Bearing in mind i don't like gears, and i played through halo 3 with a mate?
Confession time. Me having three accounts on the 360 and six(3 active ones) on the PS3. 14M sounds bs to me, they should've counted the PSP numbers and the ones without any system. It's alright, it's Sony trying to steal some spotlight in the everlasting PR cockslapping contest.
I've got 3 PSN accounts (EUR, JPN, US). Likewise, i also had 4 XBL accounts.
All ps3 accounts are connected to 1 master account
That's the beautiful thing about the way live works, you really have one identity and it is somewhat of a headache to set up new accounts (even free silver accounts). So you're not running around with 7 accounts. What if you use those online? Do you only use one of the seven to actually play online? I've had the same gamertag since live launched on the xbox 1 and I can't imagine what the point of having more than one account is. I have all my friends attached to that account. I guess not having too many viable online games to play would be a great reason to not worry about using only one dedicated account.
Grognar is right. Xbox live itself allows its live usage to be tracked publicly all the time. If you want to know how many people are physically online playing at any given time, you can. Its all tracked. And the weekly list of top games played are released and I've NEVER seen or heard of any such list for the PS3. Why don't they track that? Oh, cause its Embarrassingly *low when compared to the 360 live usage.
*educated guess
Microsoft has just recently started to display specific user count information as they never done so in the past. I am not going to speak about how many people play on the PSN but I would like to see the numbers.
Not pointed at you Nick but whenever I see PSN user accounts brought up, I am shocked to see everyone state that Xbox users only have one account and PSN users have multiple accounts. Sorry but I believe that goes across both systems. I have 3 accounts for my 360 and 3 as well for my PS3. Each account pointed to the 3 main territories, US, EU, and JP. Surely, Microsoft takes this into account when giving their numbers just like I am sure Sony or any competent business would take into account when providing information tot he public. I would certainly filter as much as I can to get truly unique information, so I would use ID, email, and Console as my starting point.
I have two people in the house, a mate who comes over regularly then Four regional accounts. Australia, USA, Japan and Hong Kong. So I only have one account that I use to play games with personally.
I think they're counting PSP users, I believe they folded the web account that you needed to download PSP demos into PSN. With the last update you now have the ability to buy downloadable games straight from your PSP.
It's probably safe to say PSP users are a good chunk of that stat.
Meaningless number. You don't even have to own a Sony product to set up an account. Also, many users set up multiple accounts to get access to content from different regions (primarily Japan).
It is telling that Sony has NEVER released concurrent user info either for a specific game or even generally. MS has been quick to tout the number of unique users and gaming sessions for titles like Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 and has specifically stated that over half of Live members have Gold (meaning at least 6 million users are paying $50 per year).
Michael Pachter recently stated that Sony doesn't even have 1 million actual online users (that means playing a game online, not just have their PS3 connected). You can be sure that if any PS3 title had a viable online community Sony would be bragging about it.
This press release is simply a weak attempt to take away some of the positive press MS has been getting over today's NXE release and the embarrassment that MS managed to announce and release this improved interface within 4 months, compared to the 2 years PS3 owners have been waiting for Sony to release HOME.
you think Sony can't tell if one person has 7 accounts on his/her PS3? com'on, they're not stupid, i'm sure each PS3 has its own unique S/N, once it's activated (when you open up your first PSN account on that machine) the number goes up by one, the 2nd time you open up another PSN account on the same machine, it won't increase the count because the S/N is already marked as registered on their system.
Are you seriously this naiive? You better believe they'll be counting every single account for the sake of positive numbers. Microsoft too. It's just how business is done.
That said, has PS3 even sold well enough to warrant 14 million individual accounts? Sounds fishy to me.
why would you have more then one?
thats pretty lame
Each region have their own specific games or get game releases early. On my 360 and PS3, I have an account to each of the big regions to download demos early or try games that would never be available in the US.
Microsoft frowns on that! ^^
As far as your previous comment, you're right. I have an account I've had since the Xbox 1 (my gamertag is O1 and any live user knows to have an account that simple you've had to be on live from the beginning), but I also have had over the years 1 month free accounts I created for the purpose of playing Halo 2 against people that weren't modders or stand-byers (any rank near 30 you'd see quite a bit of cheating in Halo 2). So to be fair, I guess that means over the years I probably have created 7 accounts or so, although only 1 is still in use. My son has an account but its not connected to live, and my wife as her own gamertag on her own 360. So, you're probably right in that a lot of 360 users have created multiple LIVE accounts, but I'd guess most of them were just temporary since having more than 1-2 active live accounts wouldn't make too much sense (ones you actually use for online play).

had to.
I have seven on mine. I'm sure most people have at least two.
