PS3 Slim has been outselling Xbox 360 and Wii in Australia for the past month and a half, according to Sony Australia.

Over 60,000 PS3 Slim units have been sold in the country since the console launched on September 3, the platform holder told GameSpot.

“I can confirm that in excess of 60,000 units of the PS3 120GB have been sold since launch,” said a Sony spokesperson. “I can also confirm that since the launch of the new model on September 3, total sales for the period since introduction have outperformed our competition.”

While PS3 Slim appears to have made a strong start, the firm’s latest handheld, PSPgo, sold just 1,000 units in Australia in the seven days following its October 1 release. Nevertheless, Sony said that “the PSPgo launch week resulted in a solid first week volume uplift of 100 percent for the PSP platform as a whole in Australia”.

Sony’s PS3 remains in third place behind the Xbox 360 and Wii in Australian lifetime sales, GameSpot adds.

The SLIM seems to have gone down well across the board; however there is still much to do for Sony to get a stronger position in the industry. Games and services have to be excellent from this time on and advertising has to be consistent and innovative. Further they have to get more aggressive on the pricing; rather than waiting 2 years, do a little every-year. Even then the dynamics of this industry have changed and it is extremely hard now to say what the next-big thing will be.
