Sony Pulls Plug on Go!Messenger

Lower than expected user base results in Sony closing the PSP instant messaging communications service.
[Update]SCEE assures no jobs will be lost.

Sony has confirmed to Edge that it will soon shut down its Go!Messenger service for the PSP.

Sony launched the downloadable VOIP service on Feb 29 last year, and will close it on March 31.

“Although Go!Messenger brought innovative communications features to the PSP community, the service has not developed the base of users that we were hoping for,” read a post from a PlayStation Network community team leader, of which an SCEE spokesperson has confirmed.

"We’d like to thank all fans of Go!Messenger and are sorry to have to make this announcement."

Go!Messenger was established from a partnership between Sony and the service’s wireless network operator, BT. It allowed PSP users to send videos, voice recordings and text messages, as well as talk directly via video-chat.

SCEE has confirmed to Edge that there were no jobs directly tied to Go!Messenger within the company, and so no jobs will be lost from the withdrawal of the service.

Video calls and messages were used via the PSP’s GO!Cam add-on (pictured), and Sony has stated that further services that can use the device are on the horizon.
