Sony: Rivals Will Make Next-Gen Move First

WWS boss thinks competitors will have to release new consoles first, and reveals Sony is to sell Move at a profit from launch.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida thinks Microsoft and Nintendo will need to release new consoles before Sony.

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move,” the exec told Develop.

“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

Yoshida also said that, unlike PS3, new motion controller Move won't be sold at a loss when it launches in September.

“We are pricing Move as if we are launching a new platform. So because the install base of Move will help third party studios create games for it, we benefit by helping those third-parties. But we are not losing money with each one we sell.

“The technology we chose was the PlayStation Eye, and the technology sensors in Move – that’s not just hardware, that’s the software as well. The system uses a fraction of an SPU, and that really is the key. So we are able to use sophisticated technology on the cameras and the sensors, but that with the combination of the computing power of the PS3, we can make the system really, really accurate and precise.”

The main Move controller will retail for £39.99, with the navigation controller costing around £29.99 and the PlayStation Eye £24.99. A Starter Pack including the Move controller, PS Eye and starter disc will cost £49.99.
