Despite its PlayStation 3 being outsold by rival platform holders’ next-gen consoles and the PS3’s failure to make a major impact on software sales, Sony maintained that August had been a “strong month for the PlayStation brand”.

Sony’s PS3, which shifted 130K units in August, was outsold 2-1 by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and 3-1 by Nintendo’s Wii during the month, according to the latest NPD figures.

While PS2 titles accounted for three of the top ten selling games in August, only one PS3 game made the list. In comparison Xbox 360 software took two places, including No1 and No3, and Wii software scooped four places.

Sony cited $340 million in sales as reason to be positive, stating that the PS3 "finished off the summer by maintaining a steady increase in units sold over pre-July numbers, with 130,623 units sold at retail for the month", representing a "61% lift at retail over the past two months”.

Sony also suggested that a decrease in PSP sales could be attributed to consumers’ decision to hold off on purchasing the older model as they awaited the release of the PSP Slim.
