PC and Wii titles took 20 out of 30 places across the Spanish, German and Swedish software top tens during the week ended September 14.
Spore, Wii Fit and The Sims 2: Apartment Life appeared across all three top tens, while Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Brain Training made multiple entries.
There was no change in the Spanish top four as Wii Fit topped the chart ahead of Wii Play, The Sims 2: Apartment Life and Mario Kart Wii, while Spore was up one place to No5.
Spore retained the top spot in Germany, holding off competition from Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Stalker: Clear Sky and The Sims 2: Apartment Life.
Spore was also the week’s bestseller in Sweden, followed by NHL 09, The Sims 2: Apartment Life, Wii Fit and World of Warcraft.

Casual/Core are not genres. They are types of gamers, and it's an economic term, nothing more.

In the comments below, when you were using the wording "casual" to describe games, I couldn't help but think that "arcade" would have fitted better.
Noted.
It looks like the majority of the games with maybe the exception of Sweden in the top ten are casual games. Could that be a sign of the growing popularity of pick up and play casual games? The Sims, Wii fit, Wii play, Cooking Guide, Brain Training, More Brain Training, and Singstar I would consider casual games. It could even be argued that mario kart, smash bros, and even guitar hero are casual games. I'd expect those charts to add a bit more "serious" games this holiday with the amount of triple A non-casual games coming out for both the 360 and PS3. Just my thoughts.
It depends how they're played doesn't it? I could pick up MGS4 and play it every now and then if I wanted, making it a "casual" game to me. Similarly, I could learn every track on Expert mode on Guitar Hero and the SP maps, which would be pretty "hardcore".
There are very few games that allow only one style of playing them, and there in lies the fallacy of the hardcore/casual apartheid.
Exactly. That's why I said those games can be argued to be casual. Some people may consider the GH series as casual (a lot of wii owners bought it, but didn't touch madden 09). Others, as you put, more harcdcore, and the game is set up in a way you can play either way. As far as metal gear being considered casual...I don't know about that one. Playing inaccurate representations of sports in wii play would be more pick-up-and-play than what's required in MGS4. I see your point-none-the-less.
Well games like Smash bros I can see how there'd be the hardcore, "I play in smash bros tournaments players" then there's the, "I play with my kids for fun" group. But some games are casual by nature. Brain games fall into the "casual" game type. Simple, straight-forward, pick-up-and-play. Not that they don't offer challenge, or can be played frequently, but learning how to press A to select your answer in brain age is much more simple than doing some crazy combos in Ninja Gaiden or customizing your character in Mass Effect. Some games are simple by nature, some games are more complicated, that's sorta the difference I'm talking about. Yeah, if I only play my 150+ hour character in Oblvion once in a while does that mean its now a casual game, or I'm a casual player??? And some games are clearly aimed at a different crowd than the "hard core". Whatever you want to call that crowd "casual, mainstream" whatever, that crowd exists, and those games are aimed at that audience. I don't think Konami had the same people who bought cooking mama, or wii fit in mind when they marketed Metal Gear...
I'm baffled how PS3 and 360 continue to sell so little software in these 3 big european markets, especially after yesterdays revelation that there are 6 million 360s sold in Europe. Out of a possible 30 spots, PS3 has only 2 (both in Spain only) and 360 has only 1 (Sweden only). Heck, even the PS2 has 3 entries, as many as the "next-gen" consoles combined. any thought anyone?
There was very little in the way of major releases for the Ps3 or the 360 at the time. I would expect the charts to pick up for both with releases of things such as:
Force unleased
LBP
Fable 2
Gears of War 2
Fallout 3
... and the many many other big titles coming for both in the next two months.
The months leading up to october are generally empty periods for games on the main systems, (With some games squeezing in late september... halo 3 last year, forced unleased this year). So in that time games selling outside of the "Core" game market will tend to do well... There are alot of big sellers to come... and some of these games wouldnt be visable if released during the swarm coming over the next three months. August into September was just a quiet period
You also forgot the upcoming release (doubting it won't get pushed back) of the new xpac for Wow - Wrath of the Lich King. I know this release has been very anticipated, and so long as it delivers what Blizzard has been promising, I think it has the potential to make it on the charts no problem.
I guess that could be true. I seem to recall thinking this observation to myself a few months back too. Maybe i'll have look in the archives and check to be sure.
